So I inspected my Walton feature of Hannie Caulder today, having forgotten all about it from my lot, and found both pleasant and unpleasant surprises.

1) The colour is AMAZING. Upon inspection I found the stock on all four reels to be marked " 2 S " , which according to the guide I found online (http://www.paulivester.com/films/filmstock/guide.htm) makes it Agfa 2S stock, which is "lowfade". Woohoo!

2) The first reel has a tiny bit of fade, but still great colour, but it's missing the opening credits!

My print starts at the gunbarrel sequence at the robbery (has about 10 frames of outside shots before cutting to the shotgun-barrel-camera. Does anyone know the amount of footage missing, and does anyone have a spare Reel 1? [Big Grin]

So now, I'm looking for a non-faded Reel 1 to go with the other three reels, which were absolutely mint! If they've been run at all it's been by people who knew what they were doing!

Being that this is on Agfa 2S, perhaps the pre-print material might be suspect and therefore, looking for a new Agfa 2S reel 1 might be a mistake?

I once had the Derann 70's print of "Hoppity Goes to Town" and while on fuji (It had a slight purplish cast), reels 1 and 4 were OK, but reel's 2 and 3 were definitely not of the same pre-print quality, which was cured when Derann got a better negative for the later printing on LPP.

... so perhaps, reel 1 of this 4 reel digest was of a lesser quality?

Can anyone vouch on this, who happens to own this print?

That's a possibility of course, Osi, hopefully someone else here can shed some light on it.

Nonetheless, it would be great to have the replacement footage from the opening of reel 1, I concluded that I'm missing around 1,5-2 minutes of footage.

Just a thought Chris,if you cant get the missing footage for your
film,which I understand to be just the Main titles.Why not copy
from the TV, on film and use that.The film would be mute,but it is
possible to get it striped and rerecord the music.

Yeah, I've thought about it, but I haven't got any cartridges left so will have to do that some time later then :-)

My copy of Hannie Caulder is also from Walton, but it is on Fuji Film stock (78 AJ) and seems to be a bit faded.
It would be nice to see some screen shots from you copy, so I can see how the colors should be.
I don't think you miss a lot on reel 1, because before the shoot out you see the bad guys enter town and enter the bank. When someone sounds the alarm, the robbers start shooting in the bank and when they exit the bank the shoot out starts
Is your copy in scope too?

Interesting that you have a Walton feature on Agfa - that's the first one I've heard about as I've only come across a very small number of Walton shorts on Agfa. It's not a title that I would have guessed they would be printing so close to the end as I expect it was released a few years previously.

Contact Wayne Tuell for contact information on a gentleman who will kinescope from a computer file in 16mm with sound, and it's relatively reasonable in cost.

iI have the flat version and the only marking I can distinguish is
the figure 1,my other print is the cinemascope that is printed Fuji.
The flat print has very natural colour that is reminicient of their
earlier release "Witchfinder General" which is outstanding.

It seems very purple, but still the blacks and blues seem pretty OK.

I see there is no Balance Stripe on the print. Do any Walton prints have one? In the U.S.A. Hannie was released by Paramount Pictures. Do the Walton prints have the Paramount Mountain Logo?

Hello Hans and Joe,the 'scope print is much the same as mine
Hans but mine has a slight pink hue,The flat print has better
colour,especially flesh tones.As for the balance stripe Joe,this was
a penny pinching exercise from Walton that they were taken to task for over here,especially when they were releasing 'scope
prints where the focus is crucial over such a wide field.They caved
in and reinstated the balance stripe.
