Hello to everyone, who join this forum.

Though I have been a member for quite a while – it was “Yoda of Elmo” who suggested me to join in – I have not participated, because of different reasons, which I shall not bother you with!
Not that it should be understood, as I believe that I am someone special; I would however like to introduce myself briefly, just to give all of you an idea, why I´m in here. (You do have the opportunity, to scroll way down)

My name is Karsten Heising, born in 1965 in Copenhagen – the “main Capital” of Denmark – which is a very small country in north of Europe. Placed on a world map, it would be somewhere between Norway in north, Germany in south, Sweden in east, and in west though much farther away; United Kingdom – that´s where to find Denmark – I think!

My late father was in the early day of the 1960´s, offered to buy a used Keystone standard 8mm camera. He was suggested to shoot a film or two, before deciding whether to buy the camera or not. And so he did – and was of cause immediately hooked, and bought the camera – although it could be felt (economic) in the household. My mother did agree, with this purchase!
Buying this camera way back then, mean that both my elderly sister and brother – after so many years – are able to see themselves, at the age of four and two years old. I am however a bit luckier, because I “appear” three years later, only five days old – being washed in the kitchen Sink …! As the years go by, I become more and more fun of these films, did anyone mention the word; maudlin?

I have always loved the Disney universe – the Fleischer as well. The MGM and WB studios, and there animated films, came to my knowledge very late I must admit. Ever since I´ve been able to handle a pencil, I have been very fond of drawing. Trams, trolley wagons and trains, as well as building small models, working with animation, local history etc. are some of my other interest.

Now you have a brat (me) who like to draw, and a father owns a camera, the natural thing to do, is adding these two things – and the results you get out of this, is a eleven year old boy, trying to create animated cartoon, using pencil and paper, clay or Lego bricks even Action man figure.
Back in 1970´s there were only one channel in Danish Television – Danmarks Radio Fjernsyn – however in this part of Denmark, we were able to see the two Swedish channels, SV1 and SV2. The Swedish language is pretty much the same as Danish – we do understand each other, the same goes for the Norwegian – even closer to Danish.
The dear Swe(et)dish people, has always - at that time - been a head forward the Danish Television, thinking of entertaining children. At Christmas time, all from December.24. To about a week in January, there was one hour, of animated cartoons every morning in Swedish television. The most interested part was Hannah and Barbera´s Scooby Doo series. When I saw this, I decided to make my one animated cartoon.
I have later found out, that father have had a lot of patience. He went out and bought a Kodak film, pulled away our dinner table, and placed two lamps and the camera at the floor. He spend almost a whole weekend, helping me with this project of mine. In the end, the poor man had to finish the film, because it became a little too boring in the end.
The only Disney cartoons, there were shown at Danish television back in my youth, was about one hour at December.24 called: “From all of us, to all of you” – the same show every year (almost) A bit different though in the Swedish version, that was shown a day later. But we saw this Disney Show every year.
Though I have seen – perhaps not a lot - animated cartoons, in the Danish television, but they were manly from the eastern countries, such as The Soviet Union, China, Czechoslovakia etc. Some of them were actually very nice, but I was not Disney cartoons!
If you wanted to see Disney cartoons, one had to wait until the month of December, that’s when a cinema in Copenhagen (Metropol) was showing either a Disney feature film, or a Disney cavalcade of short film.

One day sometime in the fall, our dad came home from work, a little later than usual. He had bought something to my brother and me, since this didn´t have our sister´s interest – six Disney cartoons. Though they were in black/white, without sound and slightly shortened – wonderful. One has to remember, that this was in the days, before the video became common. Imagine how “popular” my brother and I suddenly were, among our all our friends.

A few years before I finished school, I made contact with a man, who had a small business in central Copenhagen. Again it was my father, who led me on the track, when he saw a letterbox that said: Animation.
Away was junior, knocking at the same door, asking questions about animation? Of cause this guy didn´t want, to spend his time on a brat like me, just showing up asking question. He told to come back another day, and so I did, and the day after. When I had shown up, several of time – he realized that I wouldn´t leave him alone, until he had answered my many questions. This was the beginning to a relationship, “teacher and student” that have lasted until today. Harry Rasmussen introduced me to the world of animation. He participated at the age of 14, as an animator in the first animated feature film in Denmark: “The Tinder-Box” by H.C.Andersen.
I have been involved with animation, a couple of years after I finished primary school, and also worked a bit with illustration – but couldn´t make a living out of it, that is why I today work as a postman – trying to get some gold to pay the all our bills, and support our three kids.

In 1978 I bought a camera of my own. A Mirrage super 8mm camera, I used for animation, unfortunately it broke a year or two later. That’s when a friend of my sister, whose husband was a sailor going to Japan, purchased and brought back a brand new camera to me. He had bought - on my behalf - a Sankyo super 8mm Sound camera, was I happy then?
Ever since I began to use this camera, my father put away his Keystone camera – and then I was filming the family - and now with sound! Even later I bought, a used Canon 1014 XL–S camera, in nearly pristine condition. This camera I have not used for many years.
When Kodak years ago, announced that it was the end of super 8mm sound film, I unfortunately began to use video a few years after.

Now I have about 1,5 kilometer, of super 8mm family film, nearly all of it with sound. But no texts that tell who is on the film, where the location are, and when it is from. My intention has been for years, to do something about this, but needed a camera that was able to do double exposure. This I have found; A Bolex H8 camera bought on ebay, converted to double super 8mm, by JKcamera in USA. The three lenses to be used with this, I have found different places such as in Germany, Italy and New Zealand. In United Kingdom I bought an Animation control unit, from a very nice and helpful Andrew Alden. – It actually amazes me every time, when writing anyone out in the world, to me (in first place) unknown person, how helpful people are!
Here in Denmark, I was given an enlargement stand for free, from a friend who owns a camera store. So I am actually ready, to begin filming my many texts, but are in lack of space!
With great shame I must admit, that I have not used any of my equipment, for so long time - how sad it may sound – not even my family films, have been through any projectors. But yesterday I decided, to see a few films, and that’s when a few problems turned up:

Before Derann Film Service closed down, I succeed to persuade Gary, to sell me an Elmo GS 1200 projector. We agreed that it was to be send to Andrew Alden in United Kingdom, who then forwarded to me in Denmark – again, he also is a very helpful person.
A have a few Eumig projectors, and have always considered that these Austrian projectors, are true workhorses and very steady. The first Eumig projector I bought was an S 926 GL back in 1981. After so many years - and I do not how many kilometers film been running trough - still working – impressive!
Elmo projectors were apparently not so common, here in Denmark. I do not recall, having seen any of these projectors, in any camera stores I have been into. I do not know why, but I got that idea, that Elmo machines were some – sorry folks – cheap Japanese junk! Was I surprised, when my Elmo was delivered, at my place? My goodness it is heavy, weighs almost as much, as my 16 mm Bauer projector, and it is “only” a super 8mm projector!

The sound that came out of the speaker, didn´t sound well, therefore I send it to Germany – to have it check out. It to quit a while, before it was returned to me, and there were apparently many things, that ort to be fixed !?!
Still not satisfied with the sound, there is a constant whooshing sound, besides when touching the lid, a high electric crackling sound, burst out of the speaker – some kind of transition, in the electric system I assume?
What to do about this? Anyone got a useful advice?

I bought a Weberling Bespurungs Machine – from Kinotechnik Rinser in Germany, and used this on a few film I had spliced together (the original sound, I have stored on a device, I actually can´t remember what is called. I borrowed it from an old schoolmate) My intention are, to transferred the sound, to these magnetic stripes afterwards.
When running this film through my Elmo projector, the soundstripe suddenly turned loose, and made a hell of a mess!
I am now starting to get worried: If the magnetic soundstripe falls of, how to get sound on my texts, I have planned to create? Anyone got any experience with soundstriping?

I wonder whether the result will be any better, by having my films soundstriped, by someone else – a few companies offers this out at the internet!
Another thing that I have been thinking of; Where did Derann Film, get there raw material from, thinking of the magnetic soundstripe?

Looking forward to hear from the forum.

Best wishes

Karsten Heising

P.S. I do hope that you will forgive me my English?

Registered in 2008 ...4 years ago...and today is your first post. So what am I supposed to say..."Welcome to the Forum"...?? [Big Grin]

Anyway, seems you are not a newbie to this hobby, you knew Derann already and has a GS1200. Your technical contribution or even just a story sharing can be worth full to this forum.

Please write more.

Karsten, I would get that projector of yours checked out,it sounds
like an earth problem,my recommendations on equipment would
be a rubber glove, otherwise you might be getting a jolt that'll
make your tattoo's jiggle.
Regarding the re striping of your prints,I honestly don't know of
anyone that would.Derann's was liquid stripe and well beyond
the application by the amateur, requiring specialist equipment.
If your stripe is coming of it might have been that your cement
was old and has not bonded with the film base.

Hello Hugh and Winbert. Thank you very much, for bidding me welcome, to this interesting forum.

As I wrote in my previous post; that I have not participated in here (writing anything) though I do have been by a few times, just reading some of the different subjects!

Hugh: I don´t mind try to find out where, and what´s wrong with the Elmo projector, by my self – but I honestly do not know, where I ought to begin the search (the electric parts of cause) since I do not know much about these projectors?

What´s really worry me, are the whooshing sound that, comes out of the speaker.
When I run the film through my Eumig projector, the sound is fine - or at least the way, it always has been!
The crackling noise is of cause, much more obvious …

At my mother’s place, half of my father’s family film are stored, plus his old Eumig P8 projector. I can´t tell right on the spot, what number in this series of these P8 it´s from – but I think it must be one, from the later versions? This machine runs smoothly too (like my Eumig).

However just to be on the safe side, I bought a Eumig Mark 810 D from Stephan Binder (Super8film) in Austria. This projector runs both super- and standard 8mm, in case that the old Eumig P8, should suddenly “pass away” – then I´ve got an alternative.
From Super8film I have also bought - years ago - another Eumig 8mm projector: 824 Sonomatic, however this projector does not work, as it suppose to – I have to check at it as well. In the same time, I also bought a very nice Bauer P8 TS Universal projector.
Well believe it or not, after I have run my one and only 16mm film (30 ft. with the family) it suddenly stopped. I have yet another 16mm Bauer P8 TS – actually bought here in Denmark! - but not in as nice condition, like the one from Austria.

Further I was so lucky, that a very friendly couple, I use to deliver post to, found out about my interest in cine. So they gave me their Mintola K3 camera and Eumig Mark 610 D, besides a super 8mm editor, as they said; they didn´t used it anymore (all their films were transferred DVD)so why not give it away to someone who´ll appreciate and use it. This Eumig I´m trying to repair, no light for the moment being, the socket looked a bit miserable, that’s why I ordered a new socket from Hans Rinser in Germany. Hopefully this will solve my problem with the light? (I did test the bulb, in another projector)

About the sound strip turning loose - oh s… – I believe to remember, that I bought both glue and magnetic soundstribe as well, when I ordered the Weberling Soundstriper at Kinotechnik Rinser. I actually do not believe that, Hans Rinser would - knowingly - sell goods in a poor quality. But perhaps you are right; it could be the cement being too old, though it would surprise me a little. There is only one thing to do, try once again, a hope for the best?

Hello Karsten,it might be possible to re affix your stripe to the
film if it has come adrift in places,by very carefully applying the
adhesive under the stripe to your film.If you try I would advise
putting some masking tape over the picture area to avoid any
stray cement coming in contact with the picture area.Remember
that when striping a film, any film lubricant etc must be cleaned off or the adhesive will not take.So the film to be sound striped must
be completely grease free.
