I have a reel which seems like the other reels but actually only one side hole fit to the spindle. If we put the reel on the other side, the hole will not fit to the spindle.

With this I can use the reel on one side only, not like other reels that can be use both sides. What is the reason to make this kind of reels?

Hello Winbert, the hire libraries used to issue films on non- rewind
spools on 16mm,that is a square hole one side and a round hole
the other. They are also perfectly balanced, and don't suffer from
weave. The idea was that the library rewound the film to check
for any damage.

Didn't library always put a red sticker with big letters saying "DON'T FORGET TO REWIND"?

Probably it is not the case in 16mm, but I got an ex-libary 8mm print came with that sticker.

ps: just don't hope to see that kind of sticker exist at today's library. Can you imagine to receive a DVD and was asked to rewind it upon returning... [Big Grin]

I think the "balance issue' is most probably the reason. I never think about it.

But if there is any more input would be great.

That's very true Winbert,I very rarely used hire libraries, prefering
to have my own copies to view when required, but having said
that, they had hard and fast rules, that meant if a film was late
on return, you had to pay another fee.Life was tough.I never used
16mm hire libraries,as when I started,the 8mm gauges were more
than enough to keep one happy, and the hire fees on 16mm
were prohibitive.I still like to read the old catalogues and the
threats of bringing back hanging for late returns and film damage.Happy Days.

Yes Winbert- I don't like those reels either.

I have some steel Goldberg reels that are like that. It was never really a problem, until I started using a Bauer T-610. Because of the spindle design, these particular reels CANNOT be used on this projector. So, whenever I run into one, I have to stop everything and switch the film onto an extra reel before I can project it [Embarrassed] .

James.

Sorry Winbert,I didn't answer your query on the sticker you
mentioned.I can't remember Derann having any hard and fast rules, other than to get the film back on time,I can't recall any
stickers or suchlike on the films I hired from them, although that
was in the mid '70s, they might have changed their policy after
then. The 16mm men were adamant that at the most, only one
spool could be rewound, and that was just for you to regain your
own take up.The only stickers, and they were few amd far between, were on video tapes for hire.
