Hi, I have a Bell & Howell DCT Filmosonic sound projector, bought around 1982, but still in quite good condition, except for one thing. Over the years, the motor has started to cut out intermittently. At first, it only affected the rewind capability and, even then, after a few attempts the motor would kick in successfully.

Now, however, the motor has largely stopped working, whether on play or rewind. Sometimes it will work and will run satisfactorily for several minutes. But as soon as I stop it and try to start again, it ceases to function. The projector switches on and the bulb lights up, but the spool arms will not turn.

I live in Newcastle, UK, and have tried a few of the longer-established photo retailers around here but none have any knowledge of who could fix the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions where I go from here?

Many thanks.

JOHN

Hi John

Welcome to the forum.I think the armature of the motor may be corroded or rusted. It started with one spot which when the motor stops in that position it need s aturn to get started. After a while as it gets worse it won't run at all. If you are able to, take the back of the projector and see it you can get at it.With some fine sandpaper clean the armature. Or try and way you can to get it clean. If it's corrodedit will clean easy. If that doesn't do it then I don't know what's wrong. Also, check to see if the motor hums when you turn to forward or reverse. That will indicate the motor is stuck.

Good luck!

Hi John. it might be that the motor just needs new brushes.See if you can have an electrician have a look at it for you.

Hi John

I also used to live in Gateshead. Which dealers did you visit? Was it Bonsers of Bigg Market?!

Anyway, I sent my DCT to John White 8mm repair in Stanmore (Google him) and he replaced micro switches which cause the problem you describe. His costs are very reasonable, so he is the man to sort these issues out for you and service the machine at the same time.

I would point out that the DCT uses a synchronous motor.

The problem (as Simon says) is more certainly linked to a faulty micro switch.
