This is the effect I have seen occur to the top lamp pin when the lamp holder is mounted in the vertical plane.

Interesting.

Although as my current batch of lamps have the notch I'm stuck with mounting it the way it is for now.

Never seen a lamp pin wear like that Andrew; although sometimes I do change it when I feel it is getting dimmer, rather than run it until it fails.

It does only tend to happen Rob,when the lamp holder is on its last legs but each time I've placed the lamp holder in the horizontal plane, subsequent lamps have lasted their full lifespan without this occurring.

This has been the case right up until the point when arcing and intermittent lamp brightness deems a change out of the lamp holder completely necessary.

Also the lamp connections most definitely stay cooler when mounted in this direction.

What a "cool" idea. [Big Grin]

Sorry, sorry, couldn't resist.

Well, if my next Xenophot lamps have no notch, Andrew, I will start lining them up horizontally. Thanks.

EDIT!! Just checked my stock and one doesn't have a notch.

The old lamp holder did have + and - markings, and I actually marked the new lamp holder "top", but does it not matter which way you fit the bulb? So if the terminals are reversed by mistake, there is no difference I guess?

Andrew or Steve?

Does it matter which around way the bulb fits?

No Rob sorry, (only just read this again) lamps like these and most others, are not polarity sensitive so it makes absolutely no difference whichever way around you connect the lamp holder connections to the actual lamp pins.
