Jan
I think the word "vinegar syndrome" has put many people off. I assume that this film has not been anywhere near your other films as it is highly contagious & can eventually destroy your whole collection.

As sad as it sounds I have had to put two films in the incinerator at work because of this condition. Better to loose two films than a whole collection.

Craig,

The word vinegar syndrome may put
some people off, but there are those
that are willing to make an aution bid
if they believe that the conditions of sale
are ideal for thier comfort level.

But it is good that you took the
steps that you found necessary
for your collection.

Heaven knows, that collectors
have paid exhorbitant prices
for many common titles.

Indeed, your reply is helpful to Jan.
He also is honest in his
description.

Some films need - 'a wait and see effort.'
I have also have found that
if aired out and placed aside
from other films for an extended time,
they may sometimes loose the dreaded vinegar odor.

Michael

My personal problems all started with a 8mm print being placed in an empty 16mm can that once contained a vinegar print, within six months two features were beyond saving despite both being soaked in an alkaline solution & re-stored in a well ventilated cool environment.

As collectors we all know about VS & a quick glance around the film restoration & film archive sites on the web shows that this is a hotly debated topic with 1001 remedies for film stabilisation. The bottom line is that it comes down to personal choice, as you said, Jan has been honest in his description & at least the winning bidder will know what the postman will be bringing. Me personally, and this is my personal opinion is that any print I find contaminated will be disposed of without hesitation.

Good for Jan in his honest description.

Though having a little vinegar syndrome is like being a little bit pregnant [Big Grin]

I have been lucky so far in having had ony one print I bought suffer from this-Craig sniffed it and despite every treatment I can think of it ended up in the bin. I do put all films into quarantine for at least 6 months so none of the others is affected ( I hope)

Mmmm... must confess I didn't expect people to be so alarmed at my mention of VS, however all points are well taken... that said, my print of GOLD RUSH really is still in good condition - and the reason I want to sell it is merely because 1. I need the money and 2. I feel that with the limited life expectancy of the film, someone else should be able to enjoy it too before it does expire - which I don't see happening for several years yet, actually. I actually find myself reconsidering whether I really want to sell it on eBay as I'm hesitant to go much lower with the price. (Meaning, it wouldn't be worth it to me and I might as well keep the print, who knows if I'll get to show it to a small group of friends someday soon) [Smile]

BTW, here's a thread I started last year right after I had just bought and received GOLD RUSH... some very useful info about VS, what's myth and what's truth, etc. - with a consensus to it that VS isn't necessarily an automatic death sentence, though everyone has their own opinion on that of course (mostly based on personal experience). Craig,

Sorry to hear
what happened to
your film when it
was placed in the
can. This is truly
upsetting.

I agree with your
sentiment regarding
the dreadful vinegar
syndrome.

It's not worth the
chance, and there
are many films
that circulate
and that are available
on the open market.
