Hi I am new here I just got a 8mm a couple of weeks ago and picked up a 16mm today I like the way it looks on the wall just amazing. My question is what is the best size reel for 16mm what does a feature take up and what's a good size for shorts and cartoons? The projector I bought does not come with a reel so I want to do some homework .I love my standard 8mm getting ready for halloween movies. Thanks Alexander

Hi,

Welcome to the forum.

For take-up in 16mm you should have some 1600ft reels. These are the reels most used for holding features.

You should also have a 2300ft reel or two which is the maximum size on most portable projectors.

400ft reels and 800ft reels are also handy for shorts and cartoons.

All of these are easily found.

Alex, welcome to the forum. A 1600 ft reel will hold approx. 40 minutes of film. More if polyester stock is used. Do the maths. [Wink]
You should also get a split reel as some films come on cores (ie- without spools).
