I recently acquired my first 16mm machine, a Rank Aldis automatic. The problem I have with it is that although rewinding reel to reel works fine, if I turn the control knob to reverse, the film runs backwards but the feed spool doesn't take up the film.Anyone have any experience of this?

This is an unusual problem, but it is possible that the coupling lever for rapid rewinding is somehow stuck in the rewind position (pull towards you), this is supposed to return to its original position when the main control knob is returned to "O".

Thanks Maurice, I've checked that, and the lever is free to move backwards and forwards. If I move it forwards manually without film,it of course enters rewind mode, but when choosing reverse, nothing seems to move into position to change the direction of the feed spool.

John, I regret that I am not an engineer so have no idea what goes on inside! However, you could do no harm in taking the back off and see what moves and what doesn't.
Put in the mains plug (be very careful), and check what goes on.
You may know that Rank did not make this projector, it is a badged German Bauer, probably the P6. Rank name for GB, Philips for Holland, Siemens for Austria, and even the later models had the name Bosch on there somewhere.
Perhaps some of our Continental friends may be able to give advice.
