Do the EIKI models have the same crappy worm gears that the Bell & Howells (or as a friend of mine calls them "Smell & Bowells") have? I've heard some nice things about the EIKIs, but I thought I read somewhere that B&H actually made some of the earlier models.

No.
The Eiki/Elf projectors have different type worm gears and will not give any trouble as do the worms used in the later Bell & Howell projectors.

I'm surprised, Brad, at the negative comment of your friend on Bell and Howell. Oddly, in my experience these type of comments have been refered to Elfs. I've owned several B&H projectors going back to the wooden case types and found them to be extremely reliable. Having said that I havent experienced a problem with the worms on the later models. My present one, a TQ111 runs quietly and will manage all conditions of film, including missing sprocket holes without any trouble.
I suppose, though, after my rant, we can only go by experience.

Brad is a little "back to front" here; it was Eiki/Elf who made the last badged models of Bell & Howell projectors.

These were models 3575, 3580, 3585, 3592 & 3885.

Thanks, Maurice for clearing that up for me. I knew it was something like that.
