Were any cameras ever produced that could record sound optically?

The Auricon was a single-system sound-on-film optical sound recording camera made for television newsreel and advanced amateur use. The Auricon was made in several versions, including a version using a 1200 foot magazine for uninterrupted half hour recording. You could choose between either a variable density or variable area recording galvanometer, with or without noise reduction and several recording amplifier/mixer combinations. Pictured is the basic low price "Cine Voice II" and matching amplifier.

RCA marketed a 16mm camera in the mid 1930s with clockwork drive a microphone at the back and a battery powered lamp to record a commentary by the cameraman.

Hi Dominique,
The Auricon Cine Voice cameras were all originally intended for optical sound recording with a separate recording amplifier. Auricon later supplied a plug in magnetic recording head and separate amplifier when on-film optical recording was being replaced by magnetic stripe recording for television news. The Ebay link is for a camera without an amplifier so it will not record sound in its existing state although the seller suggests they may have an amplifier!
