HI, Heinz has complained I am sending him emails vith virus attachments in the same manner as I seemed to be getting them from Chip

As my email address has my name in it can anyone else confirm if they have received mail from me with virus attachments?

Thanks

update- I can't see that I have Heinz's email address in my outlook folder so I doubt it is coming from my account-can someone with more PC expertise offer some advice?

Tony, This is called spoofing. What is happening is that someone common to the two of you has a virus on their machine which is sending emails out to all the people in their address book but making the emails look like they have come from that person and not the address book owner.
This is the method by which a lot of Virus's try to clog the internet up and reduce bandwidth.
BTW The virus invariably gets sent with the emails so that the same thing happens on the recipeints machine. Nasty [Frown]
The recent emails from you have no virus's so dont worry Its not you sending them. [Smile]

Your emails to me Chip, are also clear of anything nasty. I now use PC-Cillin from Trend Micro which scans all my incoming emails. This software updates itself, if needed, every 3 hours so is really up to date. When I started to use this software it found stuff on my machine (minor problems) which Symantec's Norton never found.
I think you guys just have to make sure that your virus protection is up to date and then sit back and not worry about it.

Unfortunatly if you dont have any virus checker you need to ensure you DONT open up anything with an attacthment that your not expecting, just delete it. The new AVG free antivirus,(version 7) is excellent now and checks every item coming in including e mails, and its free to download on-line [Wink]

Kev, I was at the Best Buy(appliance, tech, p.c.) store near here today and inquired about the pc-cillin program you have and the sales person(who is very knowledgable) started shaking his head and advised me that it wasn't as good as the Norton protection. Go figure....of course, they(Best Buy)didn't carry your item. [Smile]

*sigh* It doesn't surprise me that the sales guy said that... Among more experienced PC users it is actually a well-known fact that Norton, while wildly popular, is not very good: bloated, relatively slow and (most of all) fails to detect and remove quite a number of viruses. May I use this opportunity to recommend ezTrust Antivirus which is sold online by CA (Computer Associates) at www.my-etrust.com - I have been using this one for a couple years myself and it is one of the BEST. They even provide DAILY updates to the virus database. And: it's cheap [Smile]

No, I do not work for CA [Roll Eyes]

Joe, I uninstalled Norton and then installed Trends PC-Cillin and it came up with a number of problems that Norton had missed on my machine. Trends software also updates itself every 3 hours and also has anti spyware etc built in.
Trend can only be got online or via specific vendors. Its the software that we use at work on our servers. It installs itself on to all our users workstations which the servers then keep updated.
Trend is also a Microsoft Partner which means that it is recommended by them.

Guys, My brother proved to me the spoofing that Kevin referred to and I have passed this on to Heinz to show him. Chip, the email that you really sent to me was virus free.

I am using AVG, Norton and Trend. Of the 3 Trend is very good and like Kevin said it picked up things Norton missed. I also do online scans with McAfee.

There is nothing on my PC that any of these can detect. Anyway I have moved over to Apple for all email work so now have to install anti virus on that so I don't pass any on to Windows users- joke isn't it.

And there was me worrying about vinegar syndrome!

Tony
