I have bought a new disc with the channels reversed. So I have written to Disney asking what to do next. Returning the title to the store confirmed that all discs have a genuine defect in the mastering. Testing other discs confirms my equipment is not at fault. This is the newest installment of the Little Mermaid, "Ariel's Beginning."

My original letter:

IN STANDARD PRO LOGIC SURROUND SOUND THE LEFT AND RIGHT CHANNELS ARE REVERSED. TEST TONE OF MY EQUIPMENT IS GOOD. THESE TETS HAVE BEEN DONE USING 4 DIFFERENT PLAYERS ON THREE SYSTEMS AND 2 COMPUTERS. PLEASE DO NOT TELL ME TO ADJUST MY GEAR. THIS DISC HAS BEEN MASTERED INCORRECTLY. AIREL'S BEGINNING ITTLE MERMAID

Next, we have their original reply:

Dear Chip,

Thank you for your email regarding your The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning DVD. We are concerned about your inquiry and would like an opportunity to address this issue with greater detail.

To restore the proper soundtrack to your television, please try the following:

Check your audio connections from your DVD player to your surround sound processor. If you are using the red, white and yellow cables to connect your DVD player, please verify that the red and white cables are both firmly connected at both ends in the proper outputs and inputs. Test tones produced by a receiver will display the proper channels even if a DVD player is hooked up incorrectly.

If you have tried the suggestions above and are still unable to get the full audio track, there may be other issues that need to be addressed. Please contact us at 1-800-723- 763; Mondays 9:30-7:30 and Tuesday through Friday 9:30-6:30 CST.

Thank you,

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment Technical Support

Finally, my reply to their first suggestion:

I have done all of that BEFORE writing to you; and I have also exchanged the disc at the store from which is was purchased.

You guys should stop with the simple stuff, check your master, and reissue the proper discs. And while you're at it, unlock the programming function, so that some of us experienced movie collectors can program the previews we want to see right before the feature.

Mistakes happen, but geesh, shame on you Goofy people!

I am now waiting to see if the Disney Police show up at my front door………

Do you suspect the channels are reversed because the stereo between left and right is obviously reversed during playback? Or is there some other fault that has put you onto it.

Most people wouldn't notice Chip. When Die Hard 3 was first released apparently a complete reel was missed out so it was quickly withdrawn. I still doubt many purchasers realized there was a problem.

It is reversed during playback. And I have checked ALL of my device connections completely. And I do know my stuff is good because I have tried other discs as well.

Fifteen years ago or so, when most people still had VHS tapes through RF channel 3 installations, nearly all of those tapes were stereo hi-fi, yet were being condensed to mono due to the at home hook up. Nobody really cared.

Now though with people buying up the flat screen hd sets and receivers, I would think they'd take notice to this.

I hope I'm not the only one complaining. You don't just put the disc in and press play for the kids and walk away.....

You do realize that our dealing with a "Goofy" company in the first place.

Maybe Goofy was the culprit in fact!

Disney is usually pretty careful about techical accuracy -- they have a legacy to live up to, you know (and great scriptwriting is not part of it). I would be very surprised if they don't reissue this, whether or not with a recall of the defective pressing.

I remember noting with interest that my kids were watching a VeggieTales DVD that boasted 5.1 sound, which at the time was pretty new to the genre. So I started listening, only to discover that FL and FR were reversed. See, it's not the first time!

Mistakes happen. I remember when Dragonfly came out in theaters I prescreened a copy in dts a couple of days before it's release. I noticed that the right channel was dead in some parts of the movie and made a posting about it on the main Film-Tech forums. Other people said it was my system and that he "would've noticed".

A couple of days after the movie opened, new discs arrived to every playdate of the film across the country and Canada with an apology about how the movie was missing audio in some channels.

Mistakes happen. The original thread is here.

For the record they have not since replied back to me.

I have also tried ALL of my Disney DVD's for programming the player options and none of them allow this. You must step through the menus and manually select the stuff you want to see.

If you have never tried programming the tracks, for example two trailers then the movie, you should. The transitions are very good, you don't have to do anything once you press play.
