The new Universal Legacy Series edition of Alfred Hithcock's Vertigo has just been released. If you already have the earlier Collectors Edition It is time to replace it with the new 2-disc release. I received the new Legacy Edition as a Christmas present and I can tell you that it is noticeably better than the previous Collectors Edition, which was excellent quality in itself. But the new version is simply stunning, with even better sharpness and more vibrant colors. San Francisco never looked so good, you can now see details in the long shot views of the bay area which were lost in the previous version. And Kim Novak never looked more beautiful, every detail of her face, hair, and clothes now being fully revealed. As DVD's go, this must represent the absolute pinnacle of quality - Universal have done a wonderful job. It is hard to imagine that a Blu-Disc version could possibly be any better. But don't hold off for that - it will probably never happen, judging by the current crop of mediocre BD titles.
