I personally think that when a seller places a "reserve price" on thier auction, it actually works against the item selling, cuz the buyer looks at it and assumes "Gad! I bet thier "reserve price" is intolerably high ...
... and in most cases, they are right.
What are you thoughts, folks?

I agree that the reserve price indication isn't encouraging, but on the other hand stating a very high price as the starting bid isn't encouraging either! Reserve prices can work in your favour - there have been two instances in which I bid a decent amount for rare 16mm features that didn't reach the reserve, and the sellers opted to sell to me for a price below the reserve level.

I've used a reserve price once and only once! If the item had sold for less, I would've been out money I wasn't willing to lose. Thankfully, it bid exactly up to the reserve and sold.
Otherwise, a low start bid and good quality stuff takes care of itself if you treat it right.
