For the past 3 nights I have been enjoying a second look at the superb 6 hour studio documentary MGM: When The Lion Roars. A must see for any film buff, and you come away from it realizing that the glorious period of MGM films was really the results of the vision of the great Louis B. Mayer. Somehow this son of a scrap metal dealer transformed himself into the greatest film studio head in the world, and gave the world the most beloved films ever. Just about everyone at the studio admired and loved L.B. but there were a few exceptions, notably Esther Williams, who called him cunning and evil. Talk about gratitude! But then Esther was great at trashing people she worked with, including Jeff Chandler whom she accused, in her biography , of being a cross -dresser. Nothing quite like destroying a persons legacy after they are gone. Anyway, a great 6 hour view, and you will never look at that MGM lion again without feeling its greatness.
