Last night we went to see the 1940's musical review In The Mood. What a great show, a real 20 piece big band playing all the hits from the 1940's, including the fabulous wartime songs, along with awesome singing and dancing to the music of Glen Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman. I give it a 12 on a scale of 1 to 10. They are currently touring the USA, and if it comes near your town don't miss it.

Rather partial to a little Glen Miller myself Paul. Still managed to fit a bit of "Swing The Mood" in occasionally when DJing a few years back.

This sounds like it would be a real spectacular to go and watch. [Smile]

Mom and Dad were very much into the Big Band era, and they loved that music as much as anyone loves any music.

It's interesting with people of that generation: you gather a bunch of them together, some of them pushing 90: canes and walkers, white hair and all, but then you play one of those songs and all of a sudden they stand up a little straighter, a smile comes on their faces and there is excitement in the room.

Dad's hip was injured when he was a teenager, and he walked with a limp the rest of his life, but you should have seen the two of them dance! Me? I'm in great shape, and even after dumping over a grand at Arthur Murray back in the 90s I can dance about good enough to scrape by at wedding receptions: we were just from different times.

It is great music meant for young people to get together and have fun. Even as somebody who was born a little too late for it I have to admit they haven't come up with anything quite the same since!

I gave my parents tickets to "In the Mood" for a Christmas present. It played here in Galveston in January. They enjoyed it and I am sure I would have too. Big Band and Swing seem to have appeal to all ages.

Quality music never goes out of fashion Guy, to the trained ear.

I'm on about my hundredth screening of Clam Jane just to watch and listen to "My Secret Love". Twas my dear Dads favourite, and one that will always have a special place in my heart.

Yes 40's music is fabulous. And the greatest wartime singer of them all IMO was Vera Lynn. Everytime you hear that glorious voice you are transported right back to that period.
As for great big band movies, my favourite is Sun Valley Serenade which stars the actual Glen Miller Orchestra with Tex Beneke, and that really cute ice skater Sonja Hene and the classy John Payne. Packed with the GM standards it is a really joyful film.

Might have to get my "That's Dancing" print out tomorrow now Paul after reading that. You've truly whet my appetite for some vintage glamour!
