Hey Folks,

So I've got my GS1200 and a bunch of films on true 1600ft reels, and the two don't fit. So I've done a bit of research on this forum, but a couple of questions remain....
1) What danged projectors used the 1600ft. reels? Something common here in America? And some of the films are optical...
2) Which 1200ft. reels with smaller hubs are best for me to watch some of these films? The plastic filmclassic ones or others?
3) Anybody want to trade me a few for something...a film, some supplies, etc.?
4) Should I keep the films store on their original 1600 ft. reels?
Sorry for so many questions, I appreciate some help!
Joseph

I would avoid using the small hub plastic 1600 foot reels on any super 8 machine that can accept them. The rock and weave side to side contact with edges of film can be heavy and cause unstable sound. Your best bet, because they are currently available from most vendors, would be a standard Taylor 1200 foot steel reel for the super 8 machines. They are reasonably priced, and hold up well for many years.

Joseph,

I've been using the Taylor 1600' plastic reels on my GS-1200 for some time without encountering a single problem. They are available at The Reel Image (937-296-9036) at a cost of $14.95.

Joseph,

I use metal 1600ft reels on a GS without a problem. What diameter are your reels? Can you take any photos to show us the problem.

Hope you don't mind me asking but you ave ensured the little swing up adapter for 800ft reels is in the down position?

Thanks for the answers so far gang...
The reel that started the problems was a print of Keaton's "The General" on a Plastic Reel Corp. of America reel that measures 12 and 3/4 inches. I went to wind off the film onto a Goldberg Bros. 1200' reel (12 and 1/4" diameter), but the film wouldn't fit. So I don't think the film would fit onto a Taylor reel of the same diameter, it looked like a similar size hub. And what about my Goldberg Bros. 1600' reel that measures 13 and 3/4 inches? Yipes! It is holding an optical sound print of the Lavander Hill Mob that wants to be watched. Perhaps I should consider cutting down the films to two smaller reels, but I have not yet learned to splice, and I'm hesitant to cut 'em. And yup, Tony, the fold out ski on the back of the machine is folded in. What are the diameter of your metal 1600' reels, and where did you get them? Hey, nobody has yet given me an idea what machine was playing these huge reels!

Hi Joseph,
Welcome to the forum.
Some GS1200's have been modified to take 1600ft spools and some people have extensions, i think Mr Wilton has them.
I was told never to use these small hub spools as you can have problems especially with wow and flutter, but looks like some are getting away with it.
Chris.

I have used the Filmclassic blue plastic 1600ft spools on the GS1200 with no problems at all. I have used the UK made metal supaspools but find that they distort too easily and then rub against the reel arms. [Frown]

GS1200 Xenon with Elmo 1.0...great combo along with a 16-CL Xenon for that super bright white light.
