Well apparently it's that time of the year when trouble makers start rumours about the forthcoming BFCC(May 20 in London). The version I have heard goes something like this:
There is going to be a 5 pound surcharge, above and beyond the cost of the admission ticket. The reason stated for this is that the organizers are going to be issuing sunglasses to protect people's eyes from the brilliant white light of John Clancy's HTI converted Elmo GS1200. Purchase of these glasses is going to be compulsory, Keith Wilton will be standing at the entrance of the Ealing Town Hall, passing them out as you enter. My question is this. Why can't people bring their own sunglasse's and avoid this unreasonable surcharge?

I hope Paul Foster brings the Fumeo 500 Watt Xenon Super 8 machine with him. Its on his website..I want it..but...the shipping alone would cost 3 x GS1200'S!! [Eek!]
Only Ignacio Benedetti has one that I know of.. and his is modded with Stereo Heads for Playback. I think he told me it weighs around 200 lbs..

The Fumeo 9145 (X500) gives the same light on the screen of the GS1200 HTI. I made some test with these wonderful machines, both on the same table, to project on the same screen.
The light output is the same because the dicroic mirror of the Osram HTI has a better performance of the mirror inside the X500. About the frame stability there are not differences.

No, Laser Goggles are not sufficiently dense. Based on the comments about John's GS1200, I think welding glasses would be a better choice! [Big Grin]

Please do not treat this topic lightly!

If you insist on watching a film via the dangerous "Clancy Conversion", special Elmo viewers made of either aluminised polyester or a very dark polymer material are available but these cannot be guaranteed to be totally safe. Never look at the screen directly without proper viewing glasses. Sunglasses do not work -- you will damage your eyes permanently if you try to experience the brilliance of HTI projection with regular sunglasses. But even with these special glasses, experts advise watching the screen only for brief periods of time. Digests, shorts or trailers are preferable to full length features

If the glasses are at all damaged -- with scratches or holes in the protective coating -- do not use them.

Doug

You're serious, all of you, aren't you? [Eek!] At first I thought all the talk about sunglasses was just one big joke.

I gotta ask... if the GS1200 HTI's light output is so dangerous, why bother in the first place? (And how is it that looking at the screen may damage your eyes, but the tiny super-8 film can run past the gate without getting scorched by the massive light throughput, even if it's just for 1/24 of a second?)

I feel like I'm being ignorant, so I apologize in advance.... but please enlighten me... [Smile]
