(This is a repost taken from one of Robert's re-recording threads)

Gee, Robert, now if you could find me English soundtracks for two Heckle & Jeckle cartoons I have... they're beautiful prints with German sound, Pirate's Gold and Log Rollers ... as a native German I have no trouble enjoying them of course, but my wife - and any audience I'll cater to in the future, for that matter - is another story. And EVERYTHING ELSE in my collection is in English [Razz]

EDIT, actually that's not entirely true. I do have a 2x400 Piccolo-Film digest of "Aikido - Die fuenf Finger des Todes." Think you can dig up an English soundtrack for that one??

Hi Jan,

I have the English version of "Log Rollers". What you could do is leave the original track alone and put the English track on the Balance stripe. Dual language film. Just playback the version you need.
I could do this for you but shipping costs might make that a not so good idea.

Kev, that really is the issue...

I have many films that I have rerecorded with my GS from soundtracks reconstructed on my Mac in 25fps. Ideally I would do it in my studio (as it really gives fantastic results) but shipping costs would indeed be a killer for members outside of France, let alone members accross the Atlantic.

I've done bilingual versions several times... [Wink]

Video files are quite big to be exchanged over the internet (it can be done but it's not 100% reliable). I keep 400fters in MP4 format and one reel "weighs" between 100 and 150 Mb. Converted to AVI, it's up to 500 Mb.

I usually charge people here for this (it helps with the purchase of spare parts from Doctor Bister!!!), but I would be willing to share with members of this forum for either a small contribution or trade against titles that are missing from my collection (I'm still looking for the 2x400 ft of The Blues Brothers...)

(I need at least to cover the burning the CDs and the shipping costs).

Kev, you would be able to handle recording on the UK side, right? Robert and alan Rik could handle the US chapter...

Yes that not a problem for me in the UK. I did think about Digitising the sound from Log Rollers for Jan but as you say even for a 200 footer the files will be quite big.

Winbert suggested in another thread (Rerrecording Service) that we should maybe have a section on the forum for these files but the trouble is that Brads server would very quickly run out of space. Then there is the upload and download times to think of.

Gentlemen,
the solution is very easy... use BitTorrent. As a matter of fact, I have my own personal torrent tracker which I could make available for you to "seed" torrents with media files, with virtually no limit to their size.

my two German prints of Heckle & Jeckle only have a main stripe, no balance stripe [Eek!] but I don't really need to keep the German soundtrack anyway. [Wink] It might just be worth it to me to ship my reel to you for re-recording... or do you maybe think you could 1. burn a CD with the digitized English soundtrack and send it to me or 2. use the BitTorrent method to send the sound file to me?

Yes I suggested in other thread (and this following discussion should actually under that thread [Wink] )about exchanging the files.

JM, why we bother with video files, which needs a large space. We just need the sound and therefore everything can be placed under mp3 files which is smaller.

The picture is no longer needed because you have edited it according the film cut down. What is needed to add just a voice code ("three...two..one..go!") to warn us that the recording should be started.

any opinion?,

Yes that might work. In this particular case for Jan, I would simply use tape and lift the sound off using my cresta tape sync unit and then lay it straight back on his copy.

Jan who released this German print?

Can't remember off-hand... have to get back to you on that. It's a pretty good print, though - sharp and with very good colors.

Winbert, I think J-M keeps the video around so whoever uses his files to re-record their prints can do it using the "wild sync" method, by viewing both the projected film and the video image side-by-side and verifying that the sound is still in sync (and adjusting the projector's speed as needed, or backing up a bit and restarting the recording from that point). Not everybody has a GS-1200. [Wink]

Also, from one reel to antother, there might be some differences, like a missing frame removed after a bad splice for instance, so I project the super 8 image, at the same size, next to the video, using each cut as visual cues and keeping my hands on the "fast and slow" buttons. With a little bit of experience, you end up feeling when to use these buttons (car tyres screeching on the asphalt are very convenient, for instance...)
