Graham

They're great ads aren't they?! The ads for both the films and the equipment are so much "of their time" and very nostalgic. I'll try and scan a couple from the old Movie Maker Mags and post them on your thread.

Here's an Elmo one from 1978;

 -

And a couple of Eumigs;

 -

 -

And a Bealieu;

 -

Wouldn't it be great to just fill in that coupon and send it off for the brochure!

Great stuff.

Mike

Graham and Mike, great ads and very nostalgic indeed. Makes you realize how super 8 camera technology paved the way for video cameras. I still think that Eumig GL stereo has the best looking ( and performing) sound console of any S8 projector.

I agree Paul, as I have that particular model of projector and I was taken back when I got it. I didn't see a photo for it before I bought it and was quite impressed by the console. The only thing that could have made it better, is if the console would fold up, as this projector is slightly awkward to store.

On a similar note to this post, yesterday, I took out my old Bell and Howell 16MM camera that i bought off a fella for five dollars, (no kidding, he really needed his drug money, huh?, it was a steal)

... and I found within the compartments of the original carrying case, the original "Bell and Howell" shiny tag that would be tied to the camera when you bought it. This particular 16mm camera was sold in the early 40's and I was amazed that it would still have that little tag, as they are very rare, as people usually just threw those away upon purchase of the cameras.

One of my all time favourite ads:

I love the elegant attire of the people, and the suggestion of what a really special occasion a movie show in the home was in those days.

I think times past were more formal in general. I have any number of old photos of railroad construction gangs with men shoveling dirt wearing starched collars and ties.

In modern times I show up to work at my "professional" job most days wearing jeans and sometimes sneakers, yet still dress nicer than the average co-worker...

I heard once that in the early days of radio, people would dress up to listen to a classical concert in their living rooms. Could that really be true?

Mike and Paul
Looking at those photo's makes me wonder that with all the modern technology that we are now used to what a Super8 projector if still being made would look and sound like. I bet by now someone would have worked out a way to extract a digital soundtrack.

The photo's does remind one of the history of 8mm launched by Kodak back in 1935. For 70 years it has been used for home movies, recording world events etc, amazing when you think of it. It never fails to amaze me that you can still pick up a 50 year old + projector and can almost guarantee that it still goes.

Paul what year did the B/H Filmo come out, brilliant photo?.

Interesting about the clothes people wore back then and the structure of society that required it, I guess it also reflected peoples values which today have changed considerably.
