My Dear Learned Friends, as a Junior Member I would like to partake of the immense amount of knowledge that I know exists amongst you in order to solve the dilemma hereafter related.
The Background - A commitment to a Christmas film show, without prior access to the venue to test the equipment.
The Criteria - Projection Distance 30 feet. Available screen size approx 10’ x 4’.
Equipment - Elmo ST1200, Sankyo GS800, Sancor 16C Scope Lens, Scope Bracket.
The Dilemma - (Bear in mind I do not have time to make or obtain a freestanding Scope Bracket in the time remaining). Which piece of my light transmitting equipment do my learned friends recommend I fit the Scope Bracket and Lens, in order to convey the splendour and majesty that is “The Sound of Music” in “Glorious Cinemascope”?
I would like the decision to reflect the fact that I expect my audience to praise me in awe and wonder, as befits any showman!
Please put your answers on the back of a postcard and a poll will be taken of the results at the end of the week and the results published in the latest copy of “Answers to Questions That Should Never Have Been Asked!”
I have to go now because Nurse Ratchet is doing her rounds and I have to pretend to be asleep or she makes me take those nasty pink pills.
Please turn off the light and close the door behind you when you leave!
Keith.

I don't think you can really go wrong with either machine Keith. Just use which one you prefer or which you feel is the more reliable.

There may be a difference between the light outputs despite being the same 150w lamp. Perhaps give them both a test to see which is brighter before deciding on the machine to use.

Thanks for your advice John. the poll stands at 50/50 at the moment.

Hi Keith

Hmmm… tough call, I can’t make an objective comparison here as I have never owned or used an ST 1200, but I am very familiar with the Sankyo Stereo 800, in fact I used to use a set up exactly as you’re describing to do fortnightly film nights (during the winter months) at a local resource centre until a couple of years ago.

The Sankyo performed admirably, we often showed scope films and I used two Stereo 800s set up in tandem with matching scope brackets and Sankor 16C scope lenses, the projectors themselves were fitted with the Sankyo Hi-Pro F1:1.0 zoom lens and the sound was routed through an external amp via a video changeover unit. The resulting picture quality on the 12 ft wide screen was very good, although it was crucial to eliminate all the ambient light from the room in order to make the image sufficiently bright.

The slightly “Heath Robinson” nature of the set-up made it all the more fun and the need to do change overs made the whole showman experience interactive and very rewarding. The shows often finished with a round of applause, I was never sure whether this was in appreciation of the quality of the presentation or sheer relief that we had reached the end with out mishap!

These were great evenings and we always had a packed house, they became a real Social event with people being as interested in the projection equipment as they were with the film. When I finished working within that organisation I stopped doing the film nights and the centre used the money we had raised to buy a video projector. When I visited about 18 months ago they said they only used it now for watching the football because the film nights simply weren’t the same without the magic of the projector whirring away, I guess there was no longer a sense of showmanship attached to the evenings. Shame.

Good luck with your show, I’m sure it’ll be great fun; and that after all is what it’s all about!

Mike

I suppose it will also depend on your preference for reel size and change. The 1200 ft capacity of the Elmo can be an advantage.

Like Mike, I do like the 800 but I also runa couple of 1200's that are really nice to use as well.

Tough call.

Your both wrong! Eumig is the only way to go! But if you have to choose between "lesser" projectors, go with the Elmo.

Thanks Mike, Tony and Osi for your input. The rating so far is 50/50 with one non runner (the Eumig - not in the stable at the race start - sorry Osi)
Regards, Keith

Thanks for the info John. Do you think that we should withdraw "Eumig", ridden by Osi,from the race, subject to a dope test? Sorry Osi.

For me the ST1200, you cant beat it, with its mighty 150watt lamp, huge 1200ft capacity, plus if you fit a 1.1 lens a really bright picture, yep perfect. [Cool]

PS I hope you are using an extension speaker [Wink]

Thanks guys, we're in the home straight and Elmo is taking the lead, by a nose. If I had another scope bracket I would call of the race and take both units, to help with reel changes.
Regards, Keith

The race is coming to an end and the Elmo’s saddle is starting to slip and it is losing ground. Please see new thread – "Elmo Heat Shield". [Frown]

Seasons Greetings fellow collectors.
The results of the Elmo vs Sankyo race is in. The film show was a resounding success, enjoyed by everyone. never had so many questions asked by youngsters for a long time. The adults were also amazed at the show.
The result was as follows - Dead-heat, with a special comendation for the Elmo.(Due to reel capacity)
I fitted the Elmo with the Scope bracket and used the Sankyo for the Academy ratio. (I managed to borrow another projector stand, without which I would have been restricted).
Films shown were -
Disney Christmas [Big Grin]
Mickey's First 50 Years, [Razz]
Three Little Pigs [Razz]
Wizard of Oz - 400' digest [Smile]
The Sound of Music - 3 x 600' Scope. [Roll Eyes] [Smile]
I really enjoyed the experience. I am so glad to be back in this hobby after 20 years. This show has made all of the expense I have incurred over the past 4 weeks worth every penny.
I wish all my fellow collectors as much joy and happiness that this world will allow. Happy holiday viewing. [Smile]
Warmest regards,
Keith

Well done, Keith.

What a degree of satisfaction you must be feeling - and all those enquiries and interest too. It's people like you, who have the wherewithall and opportunity to get out there, who will keep our hobby alive.

I say again - well done!

Now go and enjoy a relaxed Christmas.
