Hello - I am using a Eumig Mini5 8mm camera for the first time in years. Without a film, the mechanism seems to work perfectly. When I put a film in and start shooting, the film only turns over for a few seconds before i hear the spindle whirring round on its own. I have tried putting a bit of double sided tape between the film and spindle but with the same results. Any suggestions would be very welcome? Thanks, Simon

Have you tried more than one cartridge? Cartridges do sometimes jam, it might be worth tapping it on the side and seeing if the film appears to be moving freely. If you have another cartridge, try that.

The film is advanced by the claw mechanism in the gate, the spindle that locates on the back of the cartidge takes up the slack and has a clutch mechanism in it so that it will slip. If the spindle is spinning free, it might be that the clutch mechanism isn't working or that the film is not being advanced at the gate.

Hi Simon,

These cameras are great! I personally love them for their portability, and they are often easy to fix if something is wrong. The mini 3 camera is the same and even the great Eumig underwater Nautica is built on the same principle, although the mini 5 has more features.

Do a visual inspection of the moving parts while pushing the trigger. Check that the claw is moving and that the take up spindle in the compartment is moving (of course without cartridge in there).
Note: some mini 3 and 5 will run but the spindle will not engage if you are to gentle on the trigger. You should apply some pressure. (You’ll hear the difference)

As Mike says you should try another cartridge if you have one, or gently tap the sides and bang the cartridge on a table if the cartridge is stuck.

If you need to open the mini5 up to fix something I’ll try to talk you through it.

Thanks very much for the info Mike and Knut. Sorry for huge delay. With your suggestions I managed to get the film rolling, it was simply stuck in the cartridge and now is fine. Off to New Zealand next weeek to cpature some beautiful scenery in 8mm.

untill the end of k40 ,i used a mini 5 and very good it was too.theonly problem now,is finding a film stock that the 5 can accomodate,since according to Small Format Magazine,the meter wont work with the k40 replacements.
