I am considering the purchase of some Filmrenew from Wittner-Kinotechnik, however, they have a minimum order value so perhaps I could achieve this by adding Vitafilm to my order.
How do these two products differ?
I searched on the Forum and there seem to be varied comments about the products, particularly Brad who doubted Vitafilm's claim to assist the cure of vinegar syndrome.
Do fellow members use these two products, and what do they think of them?

Personally I`d get in touch with Paul Foster and buy some filmgaurd Maurice, unles of course you already have some and particularly want Filmrenew, I find it very hard on the up top noodles myself. Best Mark.

Hi Maurice I find it a little less toxic to apply and depending on when Marks tin was manufactured it also leaves just the right and very small amount of some lube on the film, quite fine.
Its much better for getting old B+W prints to chatter more sweetly through the gate etc too. I have had the odd bit of warp as a result on acetate when using filmrenew too but never with thermofilm, Best Mark.

Mark Todd, I have a tin of Thermofilm (it does say low toxicity) from years back. What do you find is the best way to apply it? The tin says "allow to dry before winding onto reel"; can it be used between feed spool and projector and if so how long a gap is needed?

Hi Martin just run it between rewinds say in a nice soft small piece of cloth( old softish Tee shirt does nicely) folded over a few times into a small pad then held folded over the film on each side of the film as it passes through with the crease on one side and the open the other if you will. Just over an inch or so square each side of folded pad will do or a little more. I`d recommend putting on some Marigolds while you do it and you will still feel the cool from the solvent through the gloves. Make sure you keep the cloth nice and damp or if you have pressure and the cloth goes drier you will put moving scratches on but you should be OK. You have to be particularly careful for that with the derann cleaner. Thermofilm its not so bad. I always just wound it on to a reel while treating then back then ran it through the machine.Thermofilm is OK for that usually. You will easily get a feel of how much is right to use etc as you go etc. Its not easy to overtreat with thermofilm so you should be OK. For gassing off I used to pop it out of the way with the box lid off for a few days or ajar etc, maybe in a clean shed or loft or cupboard etc. Good luck, Best Mark.

FILMGUARD; FILMRENEW; VITAFILM; THERMOFILM.
As far as I'm aware, none of these products claim to "assist in the cure of vinegar syndrome", Maurice. They are just cleaners and/or lubricants. Soaking a print in FilmRenew DOES relax warp or curl in a print, though.
