Recently my Dad's mate rescued a super 8 projector for me from someone who was about to scrap it.

I must admit that when he told me it was a "Prinz" I was pretty uninterested; I think Prinz was a brand name used by Dixon's photographic here in the UK back in the 70's.

However when we met up and he handed me the box I was suprised to see "made in Austria" on the side and a picture that looked very like my Eumig S810D.

Indeed, the Prinz Compere S8 is really a Eumig in disguise!

 -

Does anyone know what model Eumig it would be? It's Super 8 only...is it an 807???

 -

I thought at the very least I could use a lot of it as spares for my 810 as it seemed in good order but had probably not been used for 20 years or so.

Out of the box, like most Eumigs it refused to run as the motor just span on the hardened rubber drive disc. But hey presto, a quick clean of the disc and it sprang into life. Next the bulb which wouldn't light. The element looked alright and sure enough the contacts had just oxidised over time. A quick clean of them and the 20 year old 100w lamp burst into life with a really suprisingly bright image!

Here it is all set up for a test screening with some scope trailers.

 -

It gives an amazing account of itself with a nice sharp, steady picture and startlingly clear sound!

Here it is doing a great job with a trailer for Titanic.

 -

OK, it may not exactly be a replacement for my Elmo or Beaulieu, but great fun all the same! [Smile]

I just can't imagine having this sort of fun with ancient video projectors in another [Wink] 20 years or so...

I love that last statement, as there is a lot of truth to it.

What a great find.

Hi,

Super8data says:

"Prinz Compere 8 Sound

* same as Eumig Mark S 810"

That explains why it looks almost identical to my S810D LUX!

Joerg, that is a great reference site, thanks for the link.

Nice to see Prinz did the LUX version of the S810 also.

Rob,
The Eumig 800's are such great little projectors. But where is the focusing knob on the Prinz - looks like its been taken off?

Paul, my S810D is the same as this one; you focus the lens barrel manually [Confused]

I love my S810D which I use for Standard 8 films, but have just realised that although it is the LUX version with the bright f1.1 lens, that it is only an 18mm-28mm lens and that the f1.3 in this machine is a 15mm-30mm...so if I put this lens on the D I'll get a much bigger standard 8 image (albeit a bit dimmer).

This is just getting better [Smile] !

One unusual design feature on this Prinz is that with the front cover in place, you cannot reach the 24-18 fps speed change switch, unlike the front cover on a Eumig. Odd?!

EDIT: Aha! Paul, you are right! I have just checked the manual for my S810D LUX and the standard versions do indeed have a focus knob as you say, but the LUX versions dispense with it and zoom / focus is acheived via the lens barrel; there is an additional page inserted into the manual to explain this (which is why I didn't miss it).

Looks like the Prinz may have shaved some cost off the projector by not including the focus knob with the standard f1.3 version. However, you can still get pin sharp, consistent focus just by adjusting the lens barrel as instructed in the Prinz manual! [Smile]

FURTHER EDIT! : Paul, I'm so grateful you've pointed this out because something else has just become clear to me. I just remembered that I do have a spare f1.3 15-30mm from a discarded Eumig 800 series that oddly would never fit the S810D LUX. Looking at it now it seems to be designed with a notch in the barrel, perhaps for use with a side focus knob, unlike the f1.1 in the LUX which has a screw thread.

The f1.3 15-30mm in the Prinz has a threaded barrel, just like the LUX lens and so fits perfectly into the S810D and provides a much bigger image from standard 8!
