Hello,

Is there any detailed information online anywhere about the Northern Film Convention?

I cannot find a website anywhere. For such a big event, it seems odd there is no online facility to find details of events, programme, timings, how to book etc. Nowt definitive comes up via Google.

Regards.

Hi Den. The event is 15th / 16th November 2008 at the Savoy Hotel, North Promenade, Blackpool. There is a Dinner/Film Show organised for the Saturday evening and the actual Convention is on the Sunday. Check out the Derann website.
http://www.derann.co.uk/
They organise the event and would take bookings for the hotel, subject to availabilty.
Not to be missed. It's well worth the visit if you can make it

Thanks but I have that info.

I realise Forum members say it is great but what actually happens at the convention?

Who will be exhibiting? Who will be selling films? Will there be a trade/swap element? Will there be screenings? If so, which films? In what format? Will there be equipment for sale? Film clinics? Events for kids? Etc.

It seems a bit odd that what is supposedly the premier film collector's event has no detailed public information listed anywhere online. Nothing revealing comes up via a Google search. In fact there are more results for 2007's convention than for the one due this coming November.

On which page of the Derann site are the convention details?

So many times folk on this forum say we must keep this interest/hobby alive and not let it die out. There this huge convention coming up yet nobody beyond certain circles knows anything about it.

I wanted to recommend it to a friend who is not as clued up as the forum members but could not find a web page to forward to her anywhere. Surely, there may be lots of other curious folk who may go along if only they knew of its existence and what it actually entails. Isn't this a missed opportunity to secure more cine fans and a greater interest from the wavering or not yet knowledgeable?

Or is it really the Masons' Film Convention?

Hi Den. Sorry my previous post didn't answer your questions. Below is a quote taken from Derann’s September News letter (do you receive this – if not subscribe now?)

quote:
"GET YOUR FORM OFF NOW!!
The Northern Collectors Film Convention is looming on the horizon, so get your booking form off A.S.A.P. ‘Carry On’ actress Valerie Leon* and ‘Bond Girl’ Caroline Munroe* are sure to be as popular as last years guests.
The weekend starts with the Saturday evening dinner, a mix of good food, raffle, quiz, film-show and guests, who are both hoping to attend. Sunday has dealers, guests, Bring & Buy, Auction, film shows and Blu Ray & video projector demos!! A very full day.
The Savoy has again given us some really special rates, so don’t just sit there fill in that form and get yourself ready for a fantastic weekend!"

I agree that the "web based" info leaves a lot to be desired, but that point would have to be addressed by Derann themselves. As for it being a "Masons" meeting, I don't think I've seen any collectors in attendance wearing aprons, with their trousers rolled up, doing strange handshakes.

It may be that, from the hobbies point of view, (bearing in mind the limited, but excellent contingent of collectors in the U.K and now the E.U. - yes, collectors from abroad do attend) the organisers feel that anyone connected with the hobby will have already attended, or will have been made aware, via forums such as this, of "The Great Event".

I agree that it would be advantageous, to the hobby, for all events to be "broadcast" on the web.
In an ideal world, they would be.

"Once you've been, you won't need the advertising, just the date of the next event".

P.S. Here is a note from todays (October) newsletter -

quote:
"BLACKPOOL’S ALMOST HERE
It’s only just over a month until 2008’s Northern Collectors Film Convention and time, for those of you who leave everything to the last minute to fill in the enclosed form and make sure of your place at what has become the ‘must do’ of the 8mm calendar.
Both ‘Carry On’ actress Valerie Leon* and Bond girl Caroline Munroe* will be there so every one should have their camera at the ready.
The weekend starts with the Saturday evening dinner, with it’s great mix of four course meal, raffle, quiz, film-show and with both guests joining us it promises to be a fantastic evening and costs just £24.95
Sunday the doors open at 10am and it will be a busy day for any film enthusiast with dealers, guests, Bring & Buy, Auction, film shows and Blu Ray & video projector demos. The entrance fee is £6.00 on the day or £5.00 if purchased in advance.
The Savoy has again given us some really special rates, (eg: 2 nights bed, Breakfast and dinner [not Saturday] for £65.00 per person. So don’t just sit there fill in that form and get yourself ready for a great fun filled weekend."

BFCC has its own website with FULL details of each conventions themes and events, AND photos of past events.

Derann has no such thing.

I would have to say BFCC is a lot better advertised than NFCC.

But then again chaps I have the capability to do the web site myself and have total control over it. Most companies have to pay someone for every single change they make to their web site unless they're lucky enough to have someone employed directly who can do it for them.

I'll do whatever I can to help so if anyone goes along this year with a camera take plenty of photos and I'll endeavour to put a page on bfcc.biz as we have for Tadley Big Screen Time. Actually I hope to get to Blackpool myself but generally something else clashes with it.

Den - you have a valid point that I hope Derann will address, but please don't let the lack of web information put you off. I've attended every Blackpool convention since about 1983 and it would be an understatement to say that I strongly recommend going. It's a fantastic event that combines the experience of a convention with a short holiday, so there's plenty of opportunity to relax and talk to collectors if you wish. I encouraged a friend from London to go three years ago and he thought it was just as good as he had heard and has been back since. The attendance has been increasing in recent years and the number last year was the highest for six years. I beg anyone who has not been to go as - along with the BFCC - it's something that any serious UK collector MUST experience!

Now, I'm not a film collector (as yet) but dare I ask the very tongue in cheek question.... just how many other dealers (other than Derann, that is) of collectable film and equipment is one likely to find at the Northern Film Collector's Convention? Not wanting to rock the boat,of course.......
That's what Des is asking...but no real answers are coming out.

The "main dealers" at Blackpool are Derann and CHC. there are other "dealers" present who sell, part exchange, trade equipment and films of all guages. I cannot name these dealers because they tend to be "enthusiasts" who have a dealers table at the Convention. If memory serves me correct last year there were around 8 to 10 dealers in the main hall. There is, of course, the famous Auction in the afternoon, conducted, usually by Robert Nicholls, who "stands in" for Derek Simmonds very admirably, with his quirky sense of humour.
There are the Film Shows, very much like Ealing. These are usually published on the "handout" given when you enter the convention.
Adrian Simmonds usually has a "dedicated cinema room" for his "Digital" shows and there is the "Bring & Buy" stand.
You have "Film related" guests in attendance who will oblige with a chat, an autograph, a photo, or all three if you wish.
What makes the whole event, of course, very much like the Ealing Convention, is the collectors who attend.

You only have to search this Forum to get a "feel" for the event.

This reminds me of the tale of the man who was told -

"There's gold in them thar hills".

To which he replied,

"What colour is it?"

Anyone interested in film or projectors is guaranteed to find quite a few items of interest at Blackpool. Film is piled up by the dealers...projectors as well, and both film & projectors can be found on the Bring & Buy. I am always impressed by Derann's own 16 & 8mm tables...I have found a bargain there each and every year I've attended.

I must admit I've never been, and I'm tempted - but, is there any more film available than at Ealing? 16mm in particular.

The social side of it sounds good though.

Difficult to say if there's more film available than Ealing - possibly, especially if you count the auction. You don't see Perry's at Blackpool and the bring and buy is small compared to Ealing, but on the other hand there are several dealers/enthusiasts - including professional ones such as EFS - that you would not see in the south, and you also have some that are more in the area of film memorabilia - e.g. I bought some 35mm slides last year, from about the 1960s and featuring film stars.

If you're lucky you can find some great buys and bargains in relation to 16mm films and equipment. E.g. I recall a print of 'Silence of the Lambs' snapped up one year while I was still thinking about it, and another year I bought the most modern type of slim line Elf/Eiki slot load projector - in great condition apart from needing a new feed arm belt - on the B&B for only £70!

PLEASE try it once and you'll be hooked like the rest of us!

Thanks for the information.

I did not realise Derann actually organised the event; I just thought they were an outlet for purchasing tickets for it.
