Steve Osborne's latest news magazine had a back cover add for Brad Mason Cinema Products. I'm interested in those reels. I've asked Steve but no replies. Was advertised as being available late summer.....Brad apparently can manufacture aluminum reels for the st1200 @ 1600 footers. They looked real good in the pictures I saw.....

Chip,

Glad you brought that up; I was about to call myself as I could use a 1600-ft, and those metal ones looked very nice indeed.
Let us know if you hear from him. I'll call at some point too.

Claus.

I really don't know how good these will actually be. They do look far better than the small hub blue reels from Taylor...the cheap plastic garbage ones. I have to say, I am not impressed:

I've got one movie made up on two of those Taylor reels. They are FULL to the EDGE. And I really do mean TO THE EDGE.

Yet, when I forward those reels on to my Goldberg large hub (like 16mm) super 8 reels for playback on my Towers, the Goldberg 1600 foot reels fill out to 1/2 inch UNDER the maximum diameter of the flange.

That means the Goldberg reel is properly filled.

So the Taylor small hub reel holds 1600 feet? Are you kidding?

Using a reel that has footage capacity gauges on a flange, look at the maximum capacity of the reel of your choice. That number should be underlined. If I am correct, that is the point of maximum capacity of that reel. And it is this line that should be about 1/2 inch under the maximum diameter flange of the reel. This should allow for safe transport of the film. In other words, if you load above this line, you have chance for spillage.

That kind of makes sense.

(With all due respect to Brad Mason. Keep in mind I'm slamming the Taylor small hub reel, different than his product)
