Had it not been for my truck breaking down over the weekend I might have nabbed this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190247280250&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123

However, even at $103.50 it would seem a bit steep for a 400 foot trailer reel. But it was printed on LLP and I haven't seen this listed at all before. This is one of my trailer reels and since it had a solid black frame line I knew it was printed at the lab I was dealing with before they went out of business. It is now a laudermat. I just wanted to see what I had done back then. But, oh well, maybe another will pop up.

I liked the look of this one but the content maybe was bit much for me, sounds a great print though.
I`d like to get the sci fi one you did Larry.
If anyone has a copy feel free to drop me a line.
Best Mark.

I would have loved to have had those two trailers on there!

Humanoids of the Deep (Doug McClures last Monster flick!)
Scanners (Just love that exploding head!)

When I saw that "Blood and Guts" trailer reel on E-bay last week, I was almost sure it was one of Larry's great reals!

And as I mentioned before, my Sci-Fi and Spielberg reel have held up perfectly, so if you ever see one on E-bay, buy with confidence [Smile] .

Larry,

Could you perchance shoot me an e-mail? I am seriously considering attempting to make a negative and printing (or getting printed) some 200ft reels of ads that I have, and while I know that it would be expensive, I'm thinking about doing it, none the less.

Could you give me some advice? Are thier potentialkly, any film labs that can do this in america anymore? Stuff like that.

Larry - must say that it's great to have the input of one of the former independent Super 8 distributors here. I never realised what the LA of LA Films stood for until I saw your posts! I have some of your releases and I certainly would not sell any of them for $103!

I'm fortunate enough to have picked up, over the years, both Blood and Guts and Blood and Guts 2. I don't suppose there was a 3?

One of my favorite ones that you put out was the martial arts trailer reel. 5 fingers of Death, Blind Swordsmen...Bruce Lee..that was a great one that I will never sell.
Great stuff Larry....great! Thanks again. And again...and you sold me "Phantasm" 400fter too [Smile]

Memories!

What a coincidence, Alan. I bought my 400 foot "Phantasm" from Larry too! [Smile] In fact, I bought ALL of my Derann releases from him back then.

Are you sure that the 400 foot Kung-Fu Trailer Reel was an L.A. release? I bought one from "Reel Images" (in Connecticut). Unfortunately, that one wasn't printed on the low-fade stock that Larry used, so its lost some color.

James.

You may be right James...mine has lost a little of its color too. I got it from LA films but it may not have been his printing!

Osi-You amaze me. To answer your question concerning making negatives from your 200 footers(assuming it is super 8mm) is next to impossible. Even during the lucrative days of optical work a super 8mm movement would be hard to come by unless it was a specially made movement. The super 8mm dupe negative is no longer made, however, there is a super 8mm camera negative made but only in 50 foot lengths. I did look into possibly printing again but super 8mm print stock is now 'special order' and of course no mag track. I could probably handle the ordering of the print stock, but putting a mag track on the film and getting it recorded would be a problem. I know Novomagnetics could do the track but the cost would be prohibitive.
Adrian-I remembered the BLOOD & GUTS reel but had forgotten that there was a #2. It is probably rarer than #1. I'm sure there wasn't a #3. I never kept records of how many I printed and I have nothing left from those days.
Alan-If you told me I put out a Martial Arts reel I would have to believe you as I simply don't remember. I wish I could roll back the hands of time and know then what I know now. But even so, I started in optical work in 1980 and I already had the foresight to print them on low fade stock even if it did cost a bit more. But I guess when you're printing thousands of feet of film and you have lots of overhead it makes a difference.
There was one release I did that wasn't on low fade and that was the Star Wars trailer, my first release. I do remember I printed 100 copies and they were all sold.

Thank you for all your kid words.

Given what Larry has described, it's remarkable that any of our European friends pull this off these days. A rather proprietary process at this point!

Osi, maybe your best bet is to offer this to Derann to take on.

Larry (and anyone else interested in the Blood & Guts reels)-
Thank goodness I snapped up B&G 2 when I had the chance! My print still has perfect colour, as you would expect. The trailers on it are:

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Cat People
Creepshow
The Slumber Party Massacre
Student Bodies
Heavy Metal
The Howling

Perhaps, via another thread, members here can try and assemble a complete list of LA Films releases sometime? Were they all trailer reels?

"Heavy Metal" and "The Howling"? Gasp!

I have thought about going to Derann with it. I've also thought about doing a fun but rediculously long process ...

Take a decent Super 8 camera, project the 16MM frame by frame, use the frame by frame option on the camera, and try at least one of the thirty second commercials, just for the hell of it. I
m sure that it wouldn't have as good of quality as an, (I think you put it this way Larry), optical movement? That first paragraph of your last post was a little confusing.

Osi-

I really commend your enthusiasm! And its very healthy for the super 8 hobby. I always dreamed that if I hit the lottery (even though I don't play it [Big Grin] ), that I would get something put out on super 8. The question is not CAN it be done. There's always a way to do it. But, DO I have enough money to put into a project like this, where I most likely won't make a profit.

I have thought about doing similar things to what you mentioned, as far as copying film to see how it would come out. You never know until you try.

You should probably experiment using different methods to see which one comes out the best, before you use a whole roll on one. I copied some super 8 to super 8 (for title work) using one of those little K-mart film transfer boxes ($30-$40). The results werent too bad, except slightly darker and a little more grainy than the original.

I imagine that 16mm would look much better for a transfer though.

James.

What I would do is come across a 16MM viewer, take off the back and allow the image to project right on a solid white surface, making sure to have a perfect square, (instead of an elongated image as, when I was first experimenting with Super 8, way back when I was 14, I opened a super 8 viewer and used it as a projector, the only problem was, of course, the little lamp wasn't too bright.)

Since I would be copying frame by frame, the original film wouldn't get burned, no matter how long it takes to do each exposure, if I used the available lamp in the 16MM viewer.

A slightly reflective surface would actually be best, preferably painted with that screen paint that Steve Osbourne sells (it's magic!).

Not all frame by frame Super 8 cameras are alike. A good lense would be crucial, on that thing!

It is certainly do-able!! If I do, for instance, one of those 50ft roles, I would get approximately 4 , maybe 5 ads.

I'm still not ruling out contacting Derann, as they have done numerous great adverts, but I don't know if they would be interested in American ads.

The big cost is, of course, making the negative. I'd love to try splitting the cost of the negative, to "get er done" and then, splitting the potential profits from the prints made. It would be approximately 6 minutes.

I'd have to ask them, of course, but I'm betting that more than one negative would be made. If two, i would ask that one of the two would be kept by me, (after all, if I'm shelling out half the cost, that would certainly be fair.

Hey Gary ... are you listening? (he haunts this place from time to time, ya know!

Add me to the list of thread-derailers; just wanted to give a shout-out to Mr. Larry Arpin, from whom I ordered several Super 8 digests in a bygone era. (Not nearly as many as I would have liked, but I was on a 12-year-old's budget.) His newsletter was always a fun read, and he patiently answered my many letters. Thanks!
