Last night I did another side-by-side brightness test of my GS versus my Eumig 938. The GS was fitted with the Elmo f1.0 12.5 -30mm lens, and the Eumig was fitted with the Kodak Ektar f1.0 non-zoom lens. With the GS set at the low lamp setting, the brightness was about the same. At the high lamp setting, the GS beat out the Eumig on brightness, but the Eumig had a much whiter light because the Elmo has a definite greenish tint to it!
I tried a new bulb in the Elmo and still got that greenish tint, which I have to attribute to the Elmo lens. It's not noticeable by itself, but when you do a side-by-side test with another projector, it really stands out. Has anybody else noticed this, or is it just my particular Elmo lens?
In terms of picture quality, the Eumig with the Ektar totally beat out the GS, with the Eumig having astonishing resolution and contrast, with lush vivid colors and shimmering grain from corner to corner. In comparison, the GS picture while very good, is definately sub-par with noticeably less contrast and softer focus.
I've got to find a way to get that Ektar into a GS1200!

Mmm. Perhaps prime lenses are simply not comparable to zoom lenses, especially with such high apertures?...

Paul, I don't see any green in my 1.0 lens.

BTW, I recently read your post about changing the S938 to 110 volts and I must say that there is a nice boost in the bulb brightness. Are you still doing this without any adverse effects?

Hi Paul
I dont have a Elmo1.0 lens and never noticed a greenish tint with the Elmo1.1. Paul did you try another Elmo lens say eg the standard 1.3 to see if you got the same results, what make and type of lamps used in both projectors and when you swapped the one in GS1200 was the lamp from the same manufacturer? fitting your non-zoom Ektar onto the GS1200 would be the way to go for picture quality, is it possible?

Graham.

Paul,

I'll have to set up a few projectors and do a comparison. For a moment there I thought this thread was about a new Sesame Street show.

Mike - yes I am running my 938 at 110v transformer setting. It's been that way for several months now, with no ill effects at all. The lamp is considerably brighter and whiter and now runs much closer to its correct 15 volts.

Graham - yes I have now succeeded in getting the Ektar into the GS1200, after working on it all day today. It now focuses very well. I will be running some tests this evening and I will report on the results in the next day or so.

Doug - 'Elmo's Green Lens' DVD is now on sale at Blockbuster at $14.95 [Big Grin]
