Even though I don't have a woking projector at the moment, and may never again. Never had this digest as a kid (could never find it) but was curious as to what was on it. Feel free to spoil the surprise for me.

Marshall,

I haven't watched "The Spider" for years, but I seem to remember most of the digest using the final sequence in a cave. The film is a Bert I. Gordon production, the auteur who gave us "The Amazing Colossal Man", "War of the Colossal Beast" & "Attack of the Puppet People". I prefer the original title, "Earth vs. the Spider".

I've got the DVD and am somewhat familiar with the film. (My favorite from Mr. B.I.G. is VILLAGE OF THE GIANTS, heaven help me.) It seems like the old Ken Films catalog described the ending of the film, so I suspect the digest does lean pretty heavily on that. Not unlike their BLOB 200'.

Hi Marshall,

I had "The Spider" 200 foot silent in my collection for many years as a youngster, before getting into sound.

I don't remember that much about it now, but I did play it quite a bit, and I remember liking it. I also remember that it was mostly footage of the main two teens in the cave.

The editing is similar to "The Blob" 200 footer, which also concentrated on the second half of the movie.

James.

Just got this but can't watch it. Despite saying THE SPIDER on the cover, the title card appears to be the original EARTH VS. THE SPIDER from the movie. (I've heard that's the only title that ever appeared on prints.) It does seem to begin with one or more teens entering the cave.

Hey Marshall,

I see you live in San Pedro. I am in Huntington Beach and travel to San Pedro quite often.
I have a nice little Chinon Whisper silent reg8/sup8 projector that could be yours for the asking. I don't use it much at all and I hate to see a fellow film lover be without!
Let me know and we can set up a day next week when we can meet.

BTW, I tried to send this as an email but it wouldn't send.

Still haven't resolved the projector issue, so I borrowed my folks' Baia viewer/editor device and the bulb is dead on that. Who'd have thought that after 12 years sitting around in neglect..?

Anyway, I just finally saw Mr. McGrath's reply. Couldn't email you either. I work in Costa Mesa and pass through Huntington Beach every day. The easiest way to contact me might be to just call me at Borders at the South Coast Plaza--I'm typically there from 3pm onward. I'd really like to take you up on your offer, and if for some reason you need an editor with no light bulb...

Well, thanks, Patrick! I finally got to see (EARTH VS.) THE SPIDER. Solid little 200' reel. This was the first time I ever saw a Super 8 cutdown where the subtitles were placed against a black strip at the bottom of the frame. Wish they'd done that with THE CREATURE WALKS AMONG US! Reel has pretty much what you'd expect: kids see spider in cave, spider attacks town, spider gets done in.
