I may do an actual review of this ancient reel. But I recently won an auction for what appeared to be a very ancient copy, on standard 8mm film, of the Hindenburg disaster.

It is on that old KODAK SAFETY FILM (with a Triangle and "cross"
following), and the stock, though black and white, is purple. It is only the second standard 8mm that has that purplish stock.

I'm fascinated with this reel!

The title card is very handsome lettering with great highlights on it, and the second title card says that it was made for "Pathegrams" and edited by Eugene Castle (of "Castle Films" for the uninitiated), ending with the "Pathegrams" card. The silent titles are quite good as well!

I am curious. I have heard some of the history of Castle Films, and was this among the very first Castle Films ever released?

It even has all the leader on both ends and is a rather full 200ft. The box is a plain brown box and VERY browned and old. I wonder if this is the orginal box?

Any help folks?

Osi,

According to Scott MacGillivray's book, Eugene Castle had edited "Hindenburg Explodes" for Pathe. It was distributed by Castle Films for "Pathegrams" and was available for sale less than a month after the disaster occurred! In 1938, Castle re-released "Hindenburg" with the Castle Films logo.

WOW!!

Great quick reply Douglas!

This means I may have one of those shortly after the even't happened copies, as it doesn't have and "Castle Films" logo's on it and just "A Pathegrams Release: Edited by Eugene Castle"
(actual wording of the second title card).

It might be why this standard 8mm print is so sharp, as well, as the print was no doubt only weeks away from the actual camera negative of the accident. The earlier footage of the Hindenburg in flight and such, isn't quite as sharp buit still above the norm!

I always wanted to see if, in finding a print as close to the event as possible, would bring forth a great copy of this event.

Gadzooks, what a find!
