I know I am correct about this. How many of you know that:

There are FOUR Roger Rabbit shorts:

SOMETHIN'S COOKING
On the front of the Roger Rabbit Feature

TUMMY TROUBLE
With Honey I shrunk the Kids

ROLLERCOASTER RABBIT
With Dick Tracy

TRAIL MIX UP
With A Far Off Place

The last 3 being available on super 8 as well as the feature through Derann.

ROLLERCOASTER RABBIT is by far the best, if you ask me, and putting it in front of Dick Tracy was really taking a chance as itīs a hard act to follow... [Big Grin]

And you can also find 16mm prints of the shorts.

Actually, Roller Coaster Rabbit was meant to open for Arachnophobia, an Ambin production, but Disney demanded that the short be attached to Dick Tracy in hope people would go and see the feature after being lured by the short subject. It shows how much hope they had in the Warren Beatty vehicle.

Another short, Hare in my Soup, was supposed to go with The Rocketeer but it never went into production as Spielberg wasn't crazy about the script.

Two scripts were written for potential prequels (RR2: Toon Platoon, Who Discovered RR?) but never got the greenlight.

Although I like Roller Coaster Rabbit, as it is somehow connected to my former job in the coaster industry, I must say that this film is a total rip-off of two Popeye shorts (Popeye at the Fair, Popeye at the Amusement Park) where Sweetpea goes through the Carnies stalls and avoid catastrophe at each new step.

IMHO, Trail Mix Up features a better timing in its succession of gags.

At any rate, it's so cool that we Super 8 collectors can have the joy of seeing all of these shorts on Super 8.

"Hare in my Soup" Boy, I'd love to see the storyboards for that one!

I used to coorespond with Chuck Jones (classic Warner Bros. director, who did story boards for the Donald Duck/Daffy Duck piano duel in "Roger Rabbit") during this time, and in a hand written letter back to me, (yeah, people still did stuff like that back then), when I asked what he thought of the recently released "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", he responded ...

" I didn't like Roger Personally. "

I guess when you've worked with the best (Bugs B.), the rest pale in comparison, especially an upstart by name of Roger. [Big Grin]

I always felt the greatest idea in the whole Roger Rabbit-concept was of the cartoon characters as real live actors, discussing their character motivations and rehearsing being hit over the head by a 300 pound refrigerator! [Big Grin]

As we all know, Rollercoaster Rabbitt ends in flames and total mayhem, and as it all grinds to a halt someone in the studio goes "I donīt see it with FLAMES"... [Big Grin]

Actually, Dick Tracy wasnīt all that bad, but I felt one got into it with the wrong expectations, thinking it was going to be something like Burtonīs Batman, while it was really a totally different kind of film, enjoyable not the least for having half of the cast from The Godfather AS WELL AS Bonnie And Clyde in it! [Smile]

Jean-Marc, where DO you get all that info!? [Eek!] Also, are you no longer in the rollercoaster-game?

Cheers
Lars

Oh, also check out the extras on the Disney "Mickey Mouse and the Three Musketeers" that came out a couple of years ago, thereīs some really funny stuff there; Mickey, Goofy and Peg-Leg Pete commenting on their performances on the DVD audio track, and Pete, finding Goofy and the rest of the cast such amateurs, going "I just canīt work like this!" [Big Grin]

Can't say that I am a RR fan. I have 'Rollercoaster Rabbit' but rarely watch it. I just don't like Rogers voice, which I find grating and irritating, and I think the humour is a little crude.
Plus the quality of animation is no match for Walt Disney or Max Fleischer.

Lars, my wife is a well of science when it comes to animation, she's just back from Tokyo where she had her nth meeting with the talented Ghibli people.
I still have a foot in the park/coaster door (see my Dreamland post in the Yak section) but mostly work in the corporate/institutionnal film biz these days.

Jean-Marc, when your wife has her n+1th meeting with the Ghibli people, could she maybe lobby for releasing "Princess Mononoke", "Howl's moving castle" and "Spirited Away" on S8? I'll be first in line to buy them! Miyazaki is a master of animation!

Rob, it would be faster to redraw the three films yourself.
They don't really care about dealing with the international market, let alone any "sub market". This is why they let Disney handle all international rights for Ghibli releases outside of Japan.

I remember from a previous thread reading that not all the shorts are in scope.

I have seen "Trail Mix-up" at a scope show my friend had a while back and I just assumed the others where in scope also.

Which ones are in scope? And, is "Somethin' Cooking" available seperate from the feature?

Jean Marc, Thanks for the info.

It's been a few years since I've seen the film. Isn't the short part of the feature itself? I read an old review of the super 8 release and it sounded like a really nice print.

That would be a good one to have.

Bill
