I recently acquired two Blackhawk 200 ft sound films that have loud pops on the soundtrack at regular intervals, about once a second. I inspected the films visually and saw no damage to the film or sound strip, and no visible dirt.
Does anyone here know if this is a common problem that can be fixed? It's not my projector - My other sound films work fine.

Hi John As these films have magnetic sound stripes, don't be too surprised with occasional problems in the sound quality. Who knows if some one with a magnet has held it against the film at some stage. I think that would be capable of scatterring the tiny magnetic particles adhering to the film sound track, resulting in a popping sound or other crackling noises when playing the film. At least you know your projector is working Ok & its picking up the magnetic particle faults on the film sound track. Dont worry about it any more & just change to another film. dogtor pufferfish

I was thinking it might have been a magnet, but who knows? The seller was nice enough to agree to take them back for a refund, since the description said the sound was great. A third film I got in the same shipment was fine.

I've worked with magnetic tape since the mid 60's...and the pops you describe may be caused by the film being exposed to static discharge. Some years ago we had this problem in the radio studio I work in. In the winter, the air became very dry...we'd walk across the studio...and pick up a tape or touch something while holding a recording in our hands....we'd get a little shock and not think anything about it until later when we played the recording and we'd hear that pop...at regular intervals throughout the tape. We had to install anti static rugs over the carpeting..and put in humidifiers. That film may have been hit with a static charge at some point as well. Well, it's one theory, anyway.

Once it's "in" the print, it's as permanent as the rest of the sound. The magnetic patterns have been changed by the particles, magnet, or static. If you had access to another source, perhaps the sound could be re-recorded, but it's not possible to remove only the pops at the source.
