I'm very sorry for you getting ripped off.People who rip off someone leave a bad taste that lingers a long time.As a long time collector,if I may,I'd like to offer some thoughts on how to avoid people like him.The late Sam Rubin in the 1960s came up with some guidelines that can be translated to the internet age.First, never deal with anyone who doesn't supply a home address and phone number. This is a simple request that still holds up.If a person is reluctant to supply this information, there is usually a reason, and not a good one.Secondly,on a large transaction, break it down, send 20% of the money for 20% of the films up front. If that part of the transaction is smooth, proceed. It might take longer to get all those films, but it can only protect you.Whenever possible, check with other collectors about a person you've never dealt with.If people who dealt with tomatoesandgarlic asked around, they would have known his background and saved themselves a lot of greif.
Now,some ideas we can do right here to help.1.)I've read here more than once that none of these crooks would be in our forum. Please don't be that naive. This is the perfect place for them to go when they aren't ripping people off on ebay. The first thing this forum can do from this point on is create two types of members.A person with a sponser already on the forum gets a full membership.A person without on gets a limited membership that can be made full if they get a recommendation from a member after a good transaction. This way,one can proceed with a little more caution when dealing with a new member.2.)Have a list of people who have ripped off or misrepresented themselves to others.Sam always had a bad guy list and people did not want to be on it.What troubles me with the internet collector is the blind trust I see all the time.Human nature is such that when we meet someone with similar interests,we give them an unearned trust. This is even more true on the internet, which is why there are so many crooks. There should also be a part of the forum application that asks for an address and phone. It doesn't have to be avaliable to other members unless they have been ripped off.
There used to be a Collectors Service that mediated disputes in Classic Images. If there is enough interest,I will try to set one up online.I hope you get some ideas from this and any of your ideas would be welcome.Over the years,95% of the deals I've done were fine, but damn, you always remember that 5%.In closing, this is easy, until you have full info on the person your dealing with,DO NOT USE PAYPAL!!!!!

I don't know if Marty Pinkerman is a crook. I don't know if Marty Pinkerman is the same Marty Pinkerman (there are others!) who was exposed on the link Hans provided. But I do know that Marty Pinkerman joined the Forum in March this year. He "demonstrated his Bona Fides" by posting information on his (or not his) long play "tower" shortly afterwards, and then not long after that he published his very long list of films for sale on the Forum (not EBAY?), and a very long thread resulted, with him insisting on selling as one lot (despite more than one person being interested). He reached agreement with an OVERSEAS buyer, who would interpret delays in shipping as being fairly normal and witheld one film(originally included as a carrot?). For a domestic reason?
All that, and his subsequent absence from the Forum, and his non-response to efforts to contact him can only be described as suspicious.
So, Marty Pinkerman, if you are not a crook let's see you put your head above the parapet and give answers. If all this is innocent and the matter can be resolved properly, then do it!

John,

I especially like your idea of "limited privileges" for a new member, as this would keep people who just want to join, in order to sell a lot of films, and then disappear, never to be heard from again. Not too long of a wait, mind you, as there might be some films in that lot that are real keepers, but make them build a reputation on the forum before dumping they're "carrots" on the forum.

As you can read in the other thread, the mystery is probably solved.

One lesson Í have learned and want to share will you: if you use PayPal, don't forget there's a 45 day limit to ask for a refund.
PayPal seem to have a good buyers protection, but when the 45 days have expired (as in my case) there is nothing they can do.

Today I did call my credit card company and they will send me a form to try to refund me my money.
But hopefully I won't have to use this.
