I was looking at a print that I have, which has excellent color, but I'm curious as to the actual stock, whether it will be low phade or I've just gotten lucky.

It states ...

eastman, it then has, right after that a small circle, square and an x, followed by a "19" and then "safety film".

What kind of stock is this, early L.P.P. good Kodak SP or some other kind of experimental Eastman from back then?

Regular Eastman 1982. Very close to LPP era so maybe low fade???

Interesting indeed.
I also have movies printed on this stock. And was not in a position to understand the reason why they are still in good shape.
Thanks Michael.

Its no mystery, as far as I can see. The circle, square and x are just normal datecode.
I don't think the 19 is of any practical significance.

Hmm. It doesn't seem like regualr Eastman. I mean, nearly everything Eastman (besides L.P.P.) from that era is already pinking. Maybe it's an L.P.P. but without the official L.P.P. logo?

Or maybe I just got lucky. At any rate, I know when at least the film stock was manufactured. ThanX!

I'm not saying it isn't some kinda experimental stock just prior to LPP being introduced - it may well be. But, from the stock markings you gave it's just regular. Theres nothing out of the ordinary in the markings you quoted above.

Maybe somebody else could chime in here.

The first half of 1982, the stock was regular eastman, and it was BAD, every print I've seen on this stock is faded.

Late in 1982 LPP was released and prints made after that time are low-fade.

There are (in theory) some unmarked experimental stocks from 80/81. It's also possible that your print was an LPP emulsion on a base that wasn't marked LPP.

When you look at the fade-ins from black, are they completely black, or slightly brownish looking? If brownish, it may just be that you are lucky and it's a regular eastman print that hasn't faded much.

Much MUCH thanX!

The blacks are a perfect jet black! I at first thought that this was a Derann print when I first got it, as it has that slightly bluish cast, (but not too bad) but Derann released the special edition of this film (Close Encounters) and this is a 1977 version of the film.

The negative used had a few slight issues, (a few splices, but no jump splices) which Derrann would never allow. It is also extremely sharp, right up there with the best.

I'll still be storing it in cool dry storage, just to be on the cautious side.

Osi read this topic as it has been discussed before (with screen shots).

I have one like this, but I don't know how is my film from that post now after 5 years. It is pity I don't bring it to Canada, so I can only check back again next 4 years. I am afraid it will have faded (as usual Eastman) ... [Frown]

cheers,

Wow, you have a great memory, Winbert. Though I'm betting that most topics get discussed at least three or more times in the end, but the neat thing is that a few more details get added as a general rule, so the level of knowledge grows with each time.
