MGM were rumoured to be thinking of releasing both of these titles in their Super 8 400ft range according to Super 8 Filmaker Magazine in 1980.

Given the sales strength of other sci fi titles at the time you would think Forbidden Planet would have been a laydown.

If only............

A 3 reel version would have been great although the full length version is nice.

I lost an auction on Ebay for Million Dollar Mermaid, several months ago. I believe it was a Red Fox print, and the color was absolutely gorgeous!

Mike, is your print scope of flat?

Greg, I have never seen a print. Glad to know there are some good colour prints out there.

Probably all the Super 8 companies had planned releases that were scrapped when sales of film dropped and video hit. I am sure there were other mouth-watering titles that just missed the cut.

David, My copy of Forbidden Planet is flat. I got it from Red Fox when they first released it in the 1980s. It still has nice color to it and has good sound.

David... yes, definitely out there. I believe Dan Lail had that one up on Ebay. It went for much more than I could spend at the time, but the print was quite pristine.

Cinavision actually made a negative for a 3x400' mini feature of "Forbidden Planet", but this was around the time when Cineavision founder Dr. van Tettering died, and only a couple of test prints were ever struck. His son was asked to carry on with the 8mm business but he was not interested, and when Cineavision went under, the negs were seized for some reason or another (Derek couldn't get hold of them at Derann, if he couldn't nobody could). The M.G.M. rights were then bought by Kempski, but he never planned a F/L scope print of this title.

David - it wasn't just around the start of the 1980s that various planned releases never happened; the Derann catalogue of 1991 (which was around during the peak of the Super 8 revival) has at least two forthcoming releases that I was looking forward to that never saw the light of day.
