Hi all,

Following our previous discussion here, regarding various film stock used in releasing film, anybody know what the main reason behind choosing AGFA 2S vs. Kodak SP vs. 3M vs. Fuji Film

These 4 stocks were available around the same time, so the issue of availability can be disregarded.

Was the price really far different between one to the other?

Any regional marketing issue, where AGFA (made in German) were mostly used in Europe and Kodak SP (made in USA) were used in USA? If so, why Fuji Film (made in Japan) were not used a lot in USA?

Lastly, a still mystery for me why one company used various stock for the same release if they knew the result would be different.

Probably Larry Arpin of LA Film and Barry of Independent 8 since you two released films from that era can give me a light here.

cheers,

I think Ian owned a lab at the time. So he might be better to tell. The only thing I remember is that it was easy for me to go down the street to Kodak and pick up a roll of stock. When Kodak first released 7284, the low fade stock, it was maybe a penny per foot more. Since I wasn't printing that much I optioned for the better stock. A company printing thousands of feet would more than likely go for the cheaper stock. At the time I wasn't aware of Agfa or Fuji stock.

I'm only guessing but I'd be very surprised if ALL distributors really engaged with the issue of what stock was used. No doubt some did, but I expect others just left it to the lab to use whatever they had. No doubt in some cases the different stocks reflect changes in what the labs used, and it seems rare to have a distributor - such as Universal 8 - where everything seems to be on more or less the same stock.
