Hey guys,
I inherited this old projector from my dad. It's still pretty much new in box, I remember we hardly used it much. I turned it on quickly to test - lamp still seems fine! I'm going to set it up and get it working again.

My question is - the 'take up reel' or whatever it's called appears to be missing, I've been looking on eBay for a replacement, will any spool do? It looks like it will take a maximum of an 800ft reel.

By the way if anyone has any knowledge on this model, and can give me some tips or advice, much appreciated!

I'll take some pics later and post them up!

HI Franco

Welcome the the forum. Look in our manual section and you will find a manual to download that may apply to your Eumig. Any reel will fit as long as it's for super 8mm. Some guys like the plastin reels because they are lighter and som like metal. You may even find an original Eumig reel. Good luck with your new toy!

Thanks Pasquale.

I have not had time to, but I intend to dig the projector out again this weekend. I think it has a manual in the box, (but I downloaded the PDF version anyway - more convenient for me, thanks!). Are you saying any 8mm reel will do as a 'take up reel?'. How about this one? I am not too fussy with make or type, I would like to get this projector to work - and then maybe build a collection of old super8 films!

Hey guys. Here are some pics which I promised. I still don't have the take up spool yet, but will get it soon. I just wanted to test the device out - seems ok, but I suspect there may be problems with it. I noticed there was no sound, and I'm sure I could smell something like burning, or maybe it was just old 'dust' smell - when the fan started kicking. I will open it up and dust it out with an air spray just to be sure.

From your photo I can see that you are playing a SILENT film. You can check that if the film has (or not) magnetic stripe for sound recording on the edge of film.

BTW, the color of your film does look only a bit of fade. This is good!

How can you tell this film is silent just by the picture Winbert?
I have a copy of that movie and it has sound.

Frank I knew this film is available in sound version (I have it also).

But it is coincidence that Franco's first photo shows the transparent leader where you can see that there is no any strip on that film. So this must be silent version.

But the best way is to Franco check by himself if he find magnetic stripe or not.

cheers,

Hehe thanks for your comments guys! The reel is a cheap film I bought off ebay for testing. It's just the 'birthday song' section from the film, Alice in Wonderland - on the box it says 'in fantastic magnetic sound' - but after examining the reel I can't see any magnetic strip - just the animation cells. So you guys were right. Thanks for clearing that up. You know when I first booted that machine up and saw it project for the first time - I really felt like 'wow yes!' - now I want to buy more films! I might organise an '8mm movie night'!

Framco, this hobby is a lot of fun.

Since your first reel has a very good color, do not expect other color films will show like that too. In fact more films have now faded to pink or red, unless you buy low fade prints.

From my experience buying film in the UK, if you buy Walton Films your chance to get low fade prints is bigger than other companies. Beside, buying films released by company in France, the chances is even bigger.

I give this advise just to warn you since the beginning about this hobby to avoid any disappointment in the future.

Of course, the best way is to collect B/W films which do not bother with color fading. [Wink]

cheers,

Winbert, I don't think they would make a silent version of this movie and then put a label on the box "Hear the unbirthday song in Fantastic Magnetic Sound", if it didn't really have sound.
My guess is that the film has sound tracks but they weren't seen by Franco.
There are 2 tracks on my version of the film, a thin one alongside the sprocketholes and a thick one on the other side of the frame. They are not on the emulsion side of the film but on the other side where its all shiny. So I suggest he have another look at the film. Could be that the sound on his Eumig isn't working. Some noises or hum should be heard when the volume is turned to maximum even with no film in it.
Any hum or static noises at all from the speaker Franco? Try operating the record button a dozen times to clean oxides from the contacts in the switch. You should hear some noises from the speaker when you do that, unless the sound is not working. Check the amplifier fuse is not blown inside. Let us know what you find.

Franco,
If you follow Frank's advice to "Try operating the record button a dozen times to clean oxides from the contacts in the switch" just make sure you DO NOT have the film in the machine at the time!
If there is a sound track, you could ruin it!
