I have a Star Wars (Ep. IV) from Derann which the leader has "1989" wirtten on it.

Due to many discussions about the new restoration version of this title, which version is my print? Is this struck from the original negative same with 1977 version or not?

FYI, this print has more green tone....so may be you can also add with the history of the negative because I read that Derann used negative from France in around that year.

Hi Winbert-

Its funny you mentioned that.

When I started purchasing Star Wars from Derann, it was about a year or two after its release (around '89). At that time, Derann would allow the customer to purchase a feature film one reel at a time (if you didnt have 300-400 dollars on hand to get the whole movie at once).

Anyway, reels one and two had perfect colors. By the time I bought reels three and four (early-90's), I noticed reel three had a green tint to it. Reel 4 was almost perfect though. I considered sending reel #3 back for replacement, but by then, they had discontinued selling the movie all together.

Derann would have given a refund, but I said "NO WAY"! Its certainly better than not having it at all, and still a very good print.

Although I'm not personally a Star Wars fan, I had cause to do some reaearch regarding the Super 8 release some time ago and I can confirm that it was released in 1989. However, I think it would difficult to conclude that a reel with a different colour balance came from a different negative, because there are so many cases where despite all the prints of a particular film coming from one negative, the colour on some is very different to others.

Probably Kodak stock on the earlier reels and Agfa on the duff one.

However, and I have said this time and again over the years, Star Wars prints are not very good overall. I have seen the original review print several times and whilst this is better than every other print I have seen (and that is a lot of them) it is not up to the standard of many other later releases. If you have Star Wars and think it is good just wait until you see some of the first class prints such as Predator, Commando, Fall of the Roman Empire, El Cid etc. etc. etc..

I am not Star Wars fan either, just proud to be the owner of this print that i got through a unique way [Smile]

So let us forget about the negative issue, just my original question, can I show this and tell the audience that this film is before the restoration or in other words, exactly the same as its original presentation in 1977?

You can only say that if the scene with Luke and Leia going across the chasm in the death star has Luke throwing the grappling hook 2 times and not just one! [Smile]

Winbert, The print you have is slightly different then the original 1977 release. The one thing you will notice is that it is the "A New hope" version. The 1977 release did not have in the opening crawl "Episode IV. A New Hope". This was added later. As fas as the edit is concerned, its pretty much the same. No one will notice. I have this print and despite the issues you guys speak of, its my favorite print! mostly because Star Was Has such a big place in my heart.

Alan, I think it is grappling hook 2 times... so this is even rare? [Razz]

Adam, I will check later, and see if "A New Hope" is present.

ps: I have an idea, when I return home for good to Indonesia, I will make a screen for Star Wars fans to see how the original version is and is presented from the original format, celluloid, not digital video.

I agree, as my print is a first day release of this, and it is "1989" as well, from a french negative source.

By the way, I prefer the slightly greenish look to it, instead of the more bluish prints I have seen of this same release. Not too green mind you, but that slight greenish tone tends to "bless" the facial tones on the print, making them look more realistic in general.
