I've got a GS-1200, the optical sound is fine, but when playing magnetic sound, if the volume is low, it's o.k., but if you turn it up, there is a squeal almost like a feedback loop. Any ideas? Thanks!!

Hi Steve, for what it's worth, have you checked all the switches at the rear of the machine, like "off" and "neutral" and theres nothing causing a short across the soundhead wiring.

My ST-1200HD was vulnerable to this problem because of the switch activated by the record key. Working the switch used to fix it, then even this wouldn't work anymore and I soldered a short across the contacts that were supposed to be closed circuit in playback mode and removed the wire to the contacts for record mode. (Don't really want to know what happens if they are both closed at the same time...)
It's been quiet ever since, but I suppose I really should get a new switch and fix it for real....

I have that problem with my Gs every so often....I found that , for some reason, the record function switches on at the same time the playback function is on....so when you turn up the volume on playback...it essentially creates feedback on itself. I usually just keep pushing in the back record button and the front panel two red record levers.....and eventually the record function kicks out and all is well again. I also mess with the P.A. switch as well. I've never failed to get it straighened out. Hope this helps. Gary

hope you had some success on getting that squeal out of there. On mine, it seems to be either one channel or the other...not both. and since it has to do with the record function kicking in while in playback, the squeal goes away in opitcal playback....at least that's been my experience.
