I have 2 ST-1200s, and it seems to be a common symptom that the older projector the harder to rewind. Many posts in this forum mentioned this very problem.

I have this problem too on my 2 projectors. If I rewind 1200' reel, it can only go half way although the yellow key (near lens) to release the tension was pressed. I have then to help rewinding with fingers.

Last night, I was experimenting with 2 projectors where one projector acted as dummy (no power), and the other on was on.

Position looks like the picture below:

 -

With this position, projector can rewind without any problem, and when the yellow key was pressed, rewinding was even faster.

So do you think any harm to do this?

The only thing you're doing is rewinding from a free arm, can't
see a problem.

Hugh,

I did see that one arm is locked when in idle. I forgot which one is that, can be front or back arm. My picture above was done in my office through my aging memory.

But for anyone is trying to follow the above method, just make sure that your reel placed on dummy projector is on free arm. It is easy to check, just turn the spindle with your fingers. If it is able to turn back and forward lightly, it means the arm is free.

ps: Hugh I sent you another PM re films.

The slow rewind is caused by the clutch engaging on the take-up mechanism. Sometime you can reverse the rotation and this will relax the spindle for a faster rewing. This problem can be fixed by making a minor adjustment.

Thanks Vincent... no wonder with my set up as pictured above, the rewinding could go faster because no reels placed in take up arm. They were both on front arm which were free arms.

NOTE: keep an eye out for 16mm winders and also pick-up super 8 adaptors which will fit on the 16mm winders. They lock in place . The winder will be hard to find at a low price, but well worth the cash. This will also lesson the wear and tear on your Elmo projector. The adaptors can be purchase from Steve Osborne at the Reel Image...
