I wee question. Have a super 8 Cinemascope print which is Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend sung by one Marilyn Monroe. I understand this was a scope test sequence but wonder who put it out on 8? Derann perhaps or Red Fox.
Clues anyone.

Lee, I think I have this too. Does it end with credits indicating it originated from a documentary narrated by Rock Hudson?
I'd also like to know who released this!

That was a Derann release? I'm surprised, as the print that I used to have was rather dark. I compared the scope to the original full screen 35MM, and it appears that they just adapted the 35MM to fit scope, (which happened with a number of re-releases of non scope films, "Gone With The Wind" being among them).

However, one never really knows for sure, as that film was being shot right before the advent of scope.

I'm afraid it was Osi, released in '97 a one reel running 7 mins
I think you might have a bad copy as it gets a very good write up
in FFTC where it says colour and definition are remarkably good.

I would have to double check my reference library to verify but this is what I remember reading about the Monroe CinemaScope Number: The film was shot as a showcase for CinemaScope to the exhibitors and the press. The number had already been photographed in 35mm Flat along with the rest of "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes". Zanuck ordered the number re-shot in CinemaScope which was under development at the time the feature was being made. To my knowledge, the CinemaScope version was not taken from the Flat 35mm Negative. Its nice that 20th Century-Fox took care of the Negative unless Derann used a Technicolor print as its source.

Hugh ...

Perhaps what I got was an actual copy of he Derann super 8, from the super 8 print, as my copy was dark murky and absolute crap. WELL! If I can find a Derann copy of this, I would certainly love to get it!

Thank you everyone for the info. One thing I can confirm is my own copy is not dark. It starts with the fox fanfare and logo then into the song. I’m going to compare it with the dvd to see about possible cropping but I’m now told, as Joe mentions it was a test sequence. Interesting little item…

Hi Lee, the film was reviewed in FFTC #36, as a follow up to the
feature release thr previous year, this was done by DFS for the
folks who couldn't afford the full feature.Reviewed by Keith Wilton
he scored it Print A Sound A/B.

This is so totally awesom, to hear of a good release of this) because the one I was referring to was a copyof this from when I used to collect back in the late 1980's, so the Derann release is positively NOT the one i had ...

So beware, there are terrible copies of this out there that are not the Derann version! Make sure the copy you look for is the Derann!

Hey Hugh ...

I perused CHC website, didn't find it, and so I wrote Phil directly, and this was the response I got ...

" This was never released by Derann. The scope version was a test done by fox and never used It was a USA release and copies varied. The Derann clip was not scope, being taken from their feature which was not done in scope.

ps chc"

... so, is Phil wrong or, was this an american release that Derann reprinted, or did Derann distribute this for US companies?

Could Gary or Adrian verify?

Update ...

I was reading the comments on my "wanted" post for this title and it seems completely down the middle on whether this was released by Derann or not.

Therefore, the only way this could be clarified perfectly would be for Gary or other ex Derann employees to clarify who would no doubt know.

As I understand it Osi, the films that were reviewed in their mag
were not mentioned as being in cinemascope, but were Derann
prints, Keith Wilton, who reviewed the films both, went
on to say the Derann had a hard time getting the master material
though the colour is good to excellent with slight variations and
the definition excellent. So that should put have paid to any doubts.
