If you are tired of replacing your CXL/CXR 50W 8V bulbs, burning film stuck in gate, take a look at this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNA1vffiHrE I know you pay anywhere from $24.00 to $34.00 for replacement bulbs, and they only last for approx 25 hours, the more you turn them on and off, the less hours you get from them, because of filament fatigue, well threat no more, with this kit, you can turn the projector on and off as much as you like with out causing the LED to burn out, and also there is no heat, so the movie film can be projecting and the projector stopped and the film will not burn, even if the film gets caught in the gate, you do not have to worry about the film burning. Check out the video on the link above. Also it is on E-Bay listed under cxl/cxr LED. Right now we only have a kit for this bulb, as this is the most common one used in most 8mm projectors. -  -

The big question of course is how does the screen brightness of the LED compare with the original incandescent halogen bulb? Unless it is at least comparable in brightness, I doubt if many people would opt for this conversion. Long lamp life is great, but for film projectionists brightness is more important.
Also it looks from the pictures that the optical centerline of the LED bulb is way different from that of the original bulb, so I question how well this really works. Can you provide measurement comparing screen illumination on the same size screen?

You are so correct Paul. It's light through the gate aperture that ultimately matters.

I agree that looking at the above lamps, the LED equivalent would appear to leave us all sceptical at this stage however I applaud all efforts on this front and I am certain one day, in the not too distant future, the Marc 300, Xenon Toshiba 250w and Osram HTI will hopefully be deemed redundant.

As you correctly say, I have no problem at all with purchasing my excellent Xenophot lamps 10 at a time for £55 inc free postage, but ultimately its not the lifetime of the lamp we're looking to upgrade, just the luminosity through the gate and onto that silver screen!

I developed this kit because I was tired of bulbs burning out after approx 20 to 25 hours of use, at a cost of $34.00 each, also some times the film would get caught in the gate, or some where along the line, the film would stick in the gate and would start to blister. Well with this kit, I no longer burn out bulbs and can turn the projector on and off as many times as I need with out worrying about fatiguing the bulb filament and burning out the bulb. There is no difference in the light between the Led and the CXL/CXR bulb, I use a light condenser over the LED to aim the light directly at the gate window. I have been doing films for customers for 8 years now, I think I know what the difference in light would show, and I do not see any difference.
Right now the LED I am using gives off 1400 Lumens.

Yes Myron, the development of your LED system serves your needs perfectly.

For the issue of the film collectors needs, it appears no perfect solution has been found yet to maximize brightness through the gate to above and beyond their halogen equivalents.

When it does exist, as others have pointed out, I would expect it to be driven from an ac supply and contain it's own dicroic reflector in the way the incandescent equivalents do already or have a miniscule beam of light emitted directly through the gate.

I would imagine we are not far away from someone developing and marketing these in the most popular variants to begin with.
eg A 1231 & A1 232.
