During my years of film collecting I have come upon three Disney educational shorts I have never seen advertised anywhere. They are in standard 8 sound and have retained their colors beautifully. They are NATURE'S STRANGEST CREATURES;BIRDS,BABOONS AND OTHER ANIMALS and THE WEASEL FAMILY.They derive from Davelyn (later DCR) films. The first is the original theatrical short, the second is excerpted from "The African Lion" and the third is from the "Nature's Living Album" series, which used scenes and sequences from other Disney documentaries. And of course we know that from the sixties on,whatever short, documentary, tv show of feature excerpt could be used as an "educational" short, was used! Now I want to know if they were sold "under the counter" or officially,as,two of them do mention "Davelyn" on the end leader and the third I bought from the late Dave West himself, when he closed down DCR. Does anyone know if there were more titles printed in 8 mm? Since the second and third titles were released in 1970 and 1971,the 8 mm copies must have been issued a few years later. Any information would be appreciated.

I have just been talking to the distributor of Disney Educational shorts which he was licenced to issue on 16mm for schools and educational institutions in the UK.

He commenced with Disney distribution from about the mid-80s, he said that he was never aware of any 8mm films being officially issued, nor was he ever offered such rights.

His 16mm films were all transferred to Umatic video masters before he sold them to cine dealers in the UK.

I am unable to further comment on the issues by Dave West.
