What Super 8 film stock cannot be joined using cement?
I understand that polyester stock can only be joined with tape, but how does one identify such films?

If you hold up the reel sidways to a light, polyester film will appear amber to brown through the reel openings. Acetate is much more opaque and will look almost black.

When you've seen a few the difference is pretty pronounced. On a polyester print it's much easier to see the curves of layers of sprocket holes in the film than acetate.

Good samples to try this out on would be a late Derann print (poly) and a film shot with Kodak camera film (acetate).

Polyester is said to be thinner but I don't know if the difference with acetate can be seen on this criterion.

A lot of Derann's last releases were on Agfa stock, does this mean that all films on Agfa stock are polyester?

When Polyester film was first mentioned in the old film magazines I was sure that an article mention that you couldn't use cement splices you had to use tape, which was the cheap home method.

Libraries could us an ultrasonic splicer, but at a large cost, sure a figure of around £500 was mentioned.

This post revived my memory here's a link to a short piece on them Spliceres

I suppose the only answer is if a cement join does not hold then the film is polyester.

Polyester film doesn't hold a curl like cellulose film. It will hang almos straight down if you let out a few feet.
