Hello forum: I’ve been searching and surfing for awhile – hope this isn’t an overly redundant question. I’ve got a collection of family films, all silent Standard 8 and Super 8. Some of the Standard reels date to the 1950s; most of the collection is Super 8 shot in the 1970s-80s.
The collection is paired with a Sears “DuAll” (Bell & Howell) that doesn’t seem to work well, and also a Wards 852 “Duo 8” that seems fine. From what I’ve read, these less-expensive projectors might not be very nice to my aging films so I’m trying to decide which higher-quality, dual-mode, silent projector to acquire. Here’s the trick: I’d like something that’s A) as gentle as possible on the films and B) suitable for video transfer, which means it’ll need to have a variable-speed control, and C) is under $350 or so.
Here’s the question(s). I like the Sankyo 2000H as it’s apparently a solid dual-mode unit with rheostat based speed control. I’ve also read that Eumig projectors are the “gentlest” on film – is this accurate? I’ve been looking at the Eumig 610 D, however it does not have variable speed control; does anyone know if Eumig made any silent, dual-mode, variable speed control projectors? How about Elmo, are there any models that would match my wish-list? This brand seems harder to find than Sankyo and Eumig (I’m in the US). Finally, is a 150W unit always better than a 100W one, at least in the Sankyo/Eumig/Elmo segment?
Thanks in advance for any input! -Jeff
