It's not such a bad thing, as hobbies go it's not really that expensive (try restoring an old car...), it doesn't have to take up a lot of room and once you get past the occasional frustration it can be very satisfying.
The thing I love about it is all the different layers it has: film collecting, gear restoration, film history, presentation, filmmaking, sound systems, home cinema building and many others. Everybody experiences it differently than everybody else.
If you get together with other film people the social aspect is huge: that enthusiasm we feel just kind of multiplies when you concentrate it in the same room.
It's even something that is there for you when you need it, but will wait for you when you need to take a step back. As long as you put things away with due respect, they don't require any maintenance, and if you are smart about your spending there will be no payments to be kept up.
For example, try that with a power boat or a motorcycle!
