I have been struggling for over a year to find a way to clean inside my Elmo f1.0 lens, which has developed internal smearing which can't be removed externally. The problem was removing the lens sleeve which clamps the big outer objective lens. I just could not budge it. I had contacted Ugo and he told me to put tape around the lens barell and turn really hard to remove the front lens element. This did not work and I almost sprained my wrist trying. Well, at the BFCC in May I was chatting to someone about this (might have been Adrian) and he told me to apply a few drops of alcohol around the edge of the front sleeve, where Elmo had put some tacking glue. I was skeptical, but last week I decided to give it a shot. I wiped the bonded area with a cotton swab soaked in alcohol and let the lens sit overnight. The next day I was able to unscrew the front lens sleeve with no trouble at all! I took out the big objective lens and washed it in distilled water with a drop of dishwashing liquid. This removed all the haze from the lens which is now crystal clear. I reassembled the lens and noticed a significant improvement in picture sharpness and contrast.

Wonderful Paul. Now I know who to call when the fogging in my own pair of F1.0's gets to the point that it's noticeable.

In fact, I'll bring them with me when I finally get out to Florida!!!

Thats excellent, are the Elmo 1.1 and 1.3 lenses the same to dismantle, or are they quite different to the 1.0, cant figure out how those ones come apart.

Graham.

Hi Graham,
Looks like they are all designed differently. The f1.3 is easy to disassemble, just turn the knurled zooming ring all the way anti-clockwise and it will loosen up and unscrew. You can then pop out the lenses.
The f1.1 may be the most difficult. Looks like you have to get a special tool to engage the two slots on the lens retaining ring buried down inside the front of the lens. This is risky because you could easily scratch the lens if the tool pops out of the slots, so I have not tried this. In any case, my particular f1.1 and f1.3 lenses are clear, and do not show the fogging problem that I had on the f1.0, which of course is the lens that I always use on my Elmo's.

Has anyone ever tried to get a lens element re-coated? I have often wondered if say on e of the spectacle manufacturers you find in the high street would be willing and able to do this and if there would be any advantage

Managed to dismantle and clean the two spare 1.3 lenses I have, one of them came with a projector that had been sitting in a damp cupboard for years, they both look good now.

Thanks, Graham. [Smile]

Would it be possible, if you would be kind enough, to show us
a pic of the lens with an indication of where exactly you
successfully applied the alchool. Many thanks and best regards.

Thought I would resurrect this thread in case anyone is wondering what exactly is inside the Elmo f1.0 lens. I recently took mine apart to clean it completely, not just the big lens in the front. Along with that one and the fixed rear element, there are three inner glass elements. I cleaned them all very gently with lens cleaner, and now it's much clearer [Smile] -

Well done Joe. I have been able to remove the big outer lens, but how did you get the smaller lenses out?

I have a 1.3 elmo lens that's cloudy I don't understand how to take it apart. When I then it counter clockwise It does not unscrew.

I wish I could clean it and not have to pay a lot for a replacement

Hi Paul,

Thanks for this interesting information.

That works also for Schneider Lens Too (Heurtier, Beaulieu, etc...)

- Untighten "Counter Clockwise" the front plastic barrel, the front lens is well fitted in its housing.
- Do not overtighten during reassembly

-Concerning the secondary lens pack............I assume this is an other story

Phil

Antoine,
You need a spanner wrench to loosen and remove the metal ring after removing the first large lens. The rest of the pieces are just layered inside. Just be sure to put them back in the same order. Once the inner pieces are removed you can clean the inside of the fixed rear element from the front through the empty lens barrel before re-assembling [Smile]
