Hi all,

Recently came across our family K-30 movie camera, it was wound up and seems to run so I took it into a dark closet and to my surprise it has film in it, not completely on either reel, feels like it might be 75% used

Now, is it any good, who knows. Has the side door ever been opened in the 50+ years it's been laying around, who knows, but I am interested in finding out

A couple questions
Once the side door is open, how does the take-up reel come out?
I have a few metal film cans about 2.5" in diameter, is that for transporting the file for processing?
Any recommendations on who/where to get it processed?
Anyone have a user manual for this camera?

Thanks in advance
Rick

Hello Rick. Your camera is a double 8 one. Double means, the film (which is 16 mm wide) has to run twice in the camera (then, after process, the film is split in two). Usually, the take up spool (tne lower one) has a number (1 or 2) that helps not confusing. Some cameras have specific marks to hel remembering which side of the spool is being used (but I don't know the Keystone). A first consequence of what I wrote is that unless you are sure the spool has been exposed once and the returned, you don't know if the film has been exposed at 75 % or at 25 %. Another consequence is that if you open the camera, and expose the filmstock to the light you ruin both sides. The closet you used was probably darker than other rooms but not 100 % so the risk that light came on the film is high. Another problem I see is that, unlike super 8, the kind of stock is not written on the spool and that's an important information to process the film. So, be sure, if you decide to have your film process to send it to someone who knows what he's doing.

Hello Dominique,

Do you have a manual on this camera or know where to get one? I can't seem to find anything on the web about it which is frustrating.

Thanks, Rick

No, sorry, Rick. However, the double 8 cameras work basically the same way so I would suggest you to look on YouTube for a tutorial and see how you can adapt the demonstration to your own camera.
