Issue 265 of UK magazine Home Cinema Choice has a short feature on Super 8. Normally concerned with DVD and Blu-ray, writer Martin Dew goes over the history of 16mm, 9.5mm and standard 8 in the home before focussing on Super 8. He charts the development of the package movie, reflecting on the popularity of cut-downs in the 70s.

There's brief mention of Derann and CHC and the new Kodak Super 8 camera showed at CES. There's no mention of CHC's recent trailer releases though, which I thought was a shame - it would have been good to acknowledge that there are still Super 8 releases in the 2010s.

A magazine I used to buy religiously every month not so long back. I only stopped when I got back into Super 8mm this time around and already found myself suitably satisfied and complete with my digital set up.

This edition I will now try to find and will buy.
I think it's brilliant they've took a look at the origins of the beginnings of home cinema in this edition apparently, not just the here and now as every other edition concentrates on.

I agree John, and had they had highlighted such releases as Silence Of The Lambs, Independence Day and Pocahontas for example, they would have seen just exactly how far Derann took this intoxicating Super 8mm hobby of ours that we grew up with as kids, grew to love in our informative years, and now simply adore as much much older adults!

Hi Andrew,

Does this Magazine make a comparison with last Videoprojectors performances (associated with Bluray and upscaling technologie), as 4K systems are just available (Expensive of course, as ordinary DVD were in the beginning, but less expensive than a Beaulieu Stereo).

I subscribe to HCC and it's a nice article extolling the merits of super 8, rather than being derisive which so many AV journalists tend to be.

Going so far as to suggest that a real home cinema isn't complete without a super 8 projector.

Think us lot would agree on that!

But, yes, shame Derann was skipped over and the suggestion that super 8 died away in the early '90s.

As we know, that was actually its heyday.

Think I'll write them a polite note...

It does a review on any video projectors it features Phil within any particular edition.

In this case, it seemingly reviews a new laser powered Digital JVC projector.

It concludes each of the reviews by rating the machines under test and then on occasions compares a model with rival competitors.

It's many years now since i last purchased an edition of this, but I will make an exception for this particular edition given the feature on Super 8mm film projection is in there.

I'd like a 4k projector one day but prices will have to begin to fall a little before I will be seriously interested in buying one.

BTW I hope you do Rob and then maybe they would do another feature in the future on the extensive range of shorts and feature films Derann provided us all with well into the new millennium. That would be fantastic to see in mainstream print! [Wink]

And me too Andrew, but at this time the 4K librarie is very tight.....

I am very exciting to see how Disney will propose for UHD, Each "Classical" need to be Re recorded and I hope from the best source available.

I am sure they will be Phil knowing the degree of detail and emphasis the Disney studios place on the finished quality of their products.

I love the Derann originals of these classic films. I get far more enjoyment from viewing any of these on real film, than I do from any of my Blu Ray or DVD copies of these films.
There is something very magical about these prints I find, and the timing of release was just about perfect for the vast majority when pre laminated stock was still available but was also some of the last stock that was made available and was snapped up by Derann at the time to make prints like these.

Unfortunately I doubt it Andrew as the retro articles are just a strand they are running at the moment and the focus is all things new and digital.

But hopefully if it makes it to the reader's letters pages, I can mention the wide range of product from Derann as well as the forums and conventions which might spark a little interest from people who don't know about such things.

That'd be great Rob thanks, coming from someone "in the industry" so to speak, like yourself Rob.

Any exposure and information passed on to today's expert modern day home cinema enthusiasts can only be a good thing I'd have thought.

Many may possibly be too young to even be aware such items even exist.

Last time I went to the Uk, I tried to find this magazine but it was unknown in different places (including Whsmith). As I will attend the BFFCC this Saturday, I was wondering if someone could tell me where I could buy a copy of Home Cinema Choice.

Hello again Dominique,I got my copy from WH Smiths in Stockport close by to Manchester. Ive been in the Smiths at London Euston and it is only tiny compared to a high street store.
You would need to try and find a larger store wherever you are travelling to on the actual high street of the town or City you are visiting.

The only other issue is, by now or certainly this weekend,the stores will be all stocking the December issue and Novembers issues will have either all sold or have all been returned to the supplier for any remaining copies they had left.

If you have any difficulty finding a copy, drop me a line.
The author of the article is a member of another forum i am involved with so he may be able to supply one from the back catalogue if it is something you would really like to find.😊

thank you for your answer, Andrew and for your offer. I think I will try to find other shops this week-end but if I don't find a copy I will not hunt too long :-) I went in a large Whsmist as weel, the one in Victoria station but even there, Nothing. By the way, the month reference of this magazine seems confusing : you mentionned "November" and "December" although we're still in October.

Often WHS at stations have a more restricted choice. A large one in town would have more.

Ps it was Novembers issue Dominique and I have had it a few weeks now.
I don't know the reasons as to why, but these things always tend to come out in magazine form, a month early.
Maybe to encourage sales perhaps versus online subscription?

By next week, I'd expect December's edition to be in the shop's.
