A STRANGE PROBLEM

As we all know, whenever we fire up a super 8 sound projector at some point you will hear a noise through the speaker. Sometimes a “click,”, other times a “pop,” and other times both a “click & pop”. I have found with my GS1200 machines, it is even a “click, pop, and thump.” All normal sounds given the power that is needed to get these things turned on.

I have a very strange situation with this issue. I will explain it as best that I can. As long as I have been running super 8 sound since the late 70’s, I’ll be damned if I can’t figure it out.

THE INSTALLATION

There are 2 GS 1200 machines. The sound output goes into a audio-video selector using sound inputs only. Projector 1 goes in at input 1, and projector 2 at input 2. The same as for example, projector 1 hooked to laser disc, and projector 2 hooked to VCR.

RUNNING THE SHOW

Projector 1 is running and the reel is about to empty. It’s time for a changeover. There is active movie image and sound on the screen.

About a minute before the changeover, I turn on projector 2.

And while projector 1 is still “live”, I hear the “click, pop and thump” from projector 2. As if projector 2 sound is bleeding through and projector 1 is picking it up and the sound system broadcasts it.

Why is this possible. It should not be happening.

In theory, the only sound you should hear is from the machine that is “live.” Turning on a second device yes, makes it live too. But not when the input is switched to the machine running the reel.

Is anyone else having this issue. If yes, what did you do to solve it?

I have been running Elmo machines since the mid 80’s. From the ST800 to the GS1200 but not the GS800. And I probably noticed this with the ST1200’s but it was so minor it was easy to ignore. Ever since the GS1200’s has it been so obvious.

With thanks
